Randal McCloy, 26, the only survivor of a deadline coal mine explosion Monday, was transferred Thursday to a hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa. for oxygen treatment.

McCloy was in a coma and possibly suffering brain damage when he was sent from West Virginia University's Ruby Memorial Hospital.

One doctor said McCloy was struggling with the effects of oxygen deprivation to his vital organs, including his brain.

The director of WVU's trauma center says doctors haven't seen the neurological improvement they would like to see.

Twelve of McCloy’s coworkers died as a result of the explosion.

One was killed by the blast, but the other 11 survived for some period of time after the explosion.

A relative says some of the trapped miners left notes to assure relatives that they didn't suffer while underground.

Peggy Cohen, whose father died in the mine, says she was told by a medical examiner that notes had been left with several bodies, and they all carried a similar message of "Your dad didn't
suffer."

She says the miners reported that they were just "going to sleep."

The miners were found more than two miles from the mine's entrance.

Initial reports indicated that 12 of the miners had been found alive, but the hopes of families were crushed several hours later when word arrived that only one of the miners survived.
