Train Cars Derail Thursday In Texas

ALEDO (July 18, 2013)-A freight train has derailed this morning near Fort Worth and one Union Pacific train crewman was injured.

The Department of Public Safety says the train derailed at about 5 a.m. along the Iona-Aledo Road, which crosses the Tarrant and Parker County line just southwest of Fort Worth near Benbrook.

Traveling from Tucson to Dallas, a locomotive and four cars derailed near the intersection of Aledo Road and Markum Ranch Road in Aledo, according to an early report from KTVT, Channel 11.

According to Union Pacific spokesman Mark Davis, at least one of the crew members was injured in the accident and was taken to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Authorities are still working to determine the cause of the derailment.

Initial reports indicated at least one of the cars was carrying the volatile chemical fertilizer ammonium nitrate but subsequent inspection proved the car to be empty.

The area where the Thursday morning derailment happened is rural and not heavily populated, a DPS spokesman said.
