The head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has told a Senate subcommittee that it will take several years to have enough vaccine and antiviral drugs to fight an anticipated flu pandemic.
Dr. Julie Gerberding, in testimony before a Senate subcommittee, said even with an additional $7.1 billion in funding for the development of vaccines, it will be at best four or five years before there is an adequate supply of vaccines in this country.
She adds that it will take until 2008 to produce a stockpile of antiviral drugs to care for 25 percent of the population.
Gerberding says that the goal for this year is for enough antiviral drugs to help 20 million people.
