Republican Congressman Bill Young of Florida is hopping mad that his wife was ejected from Tuesday night’s State of the Union Address for wearing a T-Shirt urging support for U.S. troops.
Standing in the well of the House chamber, Young held up the T-shirt , which read "Support the Troops -- Defending Our Freedom."
Young says his wife was told she was removed because "she was a protester."
She told the St. Petersburg Times she was sitting about six rows from Laura Bush when she was asked to leave, and that she then argued with police in the hallway.
She says they told her they considered her shirt a "protest," and that she responded, "Then you are an idiot."
A spokeswoman for the U.S. Capitol Police says Beverly Young left of her own accord and wasn't ejected.
The congressman, who chairs the House Defense Appropriations subcommittee, had a simple description of his wife treatment: "Shame, shame."
War opponent Cindy Sheehan was also evicted for wearing a T-Shirt bearing a message of opposition to the war.
Sheehan, however, was arrested, although she was later released on her own recognizance.
Her T-shirt displayed the message"2,242 dead. How many more!"
