Mexicans Protest Border Fence By Planting Trees Save Email Print

A | A | A

(June 28, 2008)—Mexicans are planting the first of 400,000 trees in northern Mexico to form a "green wall" along the border as a protest against the huge fence the U.S. is building along the border.

The tree line will eventually stretch for 318 miles along the border between Mexico and Texas.

The governor of the Mexican border state says the trees will be a "wall of life" in contrast to what he says is the U.S. wall of "shame and hate."

Washington says the border fence is critical to U.S. security, but critics say it fuels animosity between the two countries and raises environmental and private property concerns.

The mayor of a Texas border town attended Friday's tree planting in the town of Piedras Negras.

Eagle Pass Mayor Chad Foster opposes the construction of 670 miles of border fence.

Kristy honey, if you love Mexico so much, move there. Just please do it the right way... I know you would hate to be considered an "illegal alien"... but since there are many ways of moving to mexico legally, you shouldn't have a problem.

Posted by: Corey Location: Temple on Jul 2, 2008 at 07:31 AM
LOL. Kristy, i think you are the one who is bitter. Also, you cant tell others to get a life when you yourself are on here. Get some professional help please...you are plain ignorant and its quite funny. Sweety, if you love Mexico then please go live there! Dont call Americans losers, the losers are the deadbeat illgal people that come here and steal from our SS funds, dont pay taxes, and pile 88 people to one house!!! Its not responsible to be an illegal citizen now is it? You are not a real American are you? Ill bet you come from Mexico yourself dont you? I dont beleive we as Americans are losers for criticizing the people that come here and steal from our economy and bring all of thier crime with them as well...not to mention a thousand other things...all these supposed "honest, responsible, and smart people"...there is nothing honest about them you lune!!! You are just upset because you know we who disagree are right!

For those that claim the fence is not a solution and that we should grant amnesty to all illegal immigrants out of the goodness of our hearts, just take a look at the Native American Indians. Immigrants that came to America generally did not bother to learn their language and culture. These people did not assimilate but took over their land and country. And now what’s left for the Native American Indians but reservations. If we are not careful, history will repeat itself.

Kristy, you have got to be the most unintelligable person in this discussion. One of the reasons we had to have stimulus checks was because of the illegals we pay for all the time. Geez. And you want them to make cruises illegal to Americans? HAHAHAHA! That is one of their biggest source of incomes! They LOVE us to come over and spend our money, first of all. And second of all... you go a cruise for what a week? Then GO HOME. These illegal aliens are ILLEGALLY SNKEAING into our country and we pay the price. If there was not a right option to work hard and come over here legally... I would understand. But these people are going at it the wrong and illegal way. But my favorite is that we should stop eating at mexican restaurants! omg! hahaha freaking halarious!

Posted by: Corey Location: Temple on Jul 1, 2008 at 03:47 AM
Kristy, you need to stop dogging Americans. Its possible the reason we Americans anticipate that stimulous check so badly is because our economy its so poor from having to take care of hundreds of thousands of illegal no tax paying illegals. They work alright...they work for 2.50/hr and put the legal American out of work!! I ask you from the bottom of my heart, YOU please think before you speak as you obviously know nothing about reality and how things work. Also, why are people that take cruises wannabes??? that makes no sense. If you dont like the way america is run (what with making payments on cars and taking cruises) then just go to mexico yourself or wherever...but dont put the people of my country down with your nonsense. thanks.

Posted by: Legal Location: Citizen on Jun 30, 2008 at 11:03 PM
Kristy, that's a pitiful comparison. Americans are not running to Mexico illegaly to STAY! Why should any country take in millions of people from another country for nothing in return? How about Mexico giving the U.S. free oil? Yeah, like that's going to happen! Why are illegal immigrants (aliens) not getting stimulus checks? Because they are ILLEGAL! Please think before you write and speak. Everyone deserves a better life. So Mexico needs to give it's citizens a better one, not the U.S.

Posted by: Kristy Location: WACO on Jun 30, 2008 at 09:10 PM
I just wish you guys stop hating on Mexico.. How about them wannabes that take cruises to cozumel, cancun or acapulco.. You sure love those cruises.. How about bringing a new law, saying no americans allowed on Cruises to Mexico, you work for it right, well thats what the immigrants do... they work for it. To get a better live and to have a better education. Do you see one illegal immigrant waiting for a stimulus check.. NO.. RIght? Of course not because they are smart and need no bonus to buy a brand new car in cash.. not in freAKING PAYMENTS LIKE most americans.. People please think before you write and speak! we all deserve a better life.. May god bless the way you think..

What has history taught us of what happens when millions upon millions of people are given amnesty from a bordering country?? How can a country conquer another without an actual military invasion?? Mexico once owned this land, now they want it back. What better way than to slip it's masses into our society, then try to dictate what the U.S. can or cannot do?? And the bleeding heart America is falling right into the trap, thinking we should help the "poor" illegals & Mexico in every way, shape and form. Our economy is bad enough now. What do you think it will be like when we have become ONE communist-like nation instead of independent countries? Can you say GOODBYE U.S.A. and HELLO NORTH AMERICAN UNION? Don't think it can't happen. Btw, I find it interesting that KWTX snatched this VERY discussed story completely out of the headlines so fast.

immigration is a issue that needs to b dealt with other than a fence. a fence will only skyrocket the cost of labor and materials to the point at which it will b impossible for the younger generation to take the blow of higher cost of goods and basic necessities. houses already cost 2 much take the hispanic community out and and rise the cost of everything in the future. now the question is a fence that will constantly land problems on taxpayers and create another deficete in the already struggling economy better for the future?no way

Posted by: Lynn Location: Copperas Cove on Jun 30, 2008 at 05:39 PM
The fence is a start, but definately not a problem solver. The nice thing is that it will help out the border patrol to make their job slightly easier. About SSI; many hispanics work under false pretense and pay into SSI and will never benifit from it nor be allowed to draw it so it is a win win there too. They support our SSI and they are able to support their families. Unfortunately there are always gives and takes on situations such as this. And for being so close to the border, I am astounded by the animosity and hatred displayed over a border control measure that has been talked about for decades. I honestly don't think any one race is worse than another; but the style in which the family chooses to live and raise a child in that makes one trashy or criminally proned; so look in your own family tree before you talk trash about another nationality. After all, if we were so correct, we would not be slandering strangers via blogs.

Posted by: Olin Location: USA on Jun 30, 2008 at 05:36 PM
Of course if Mexico really wanted to show that they cared about the U.S. they could employ Mexicans (and perhaps a few illegal U.S. workers out of sympathy to show that the U.S. is not the only country that suffers an illegal immigration problem) to construct new oil refineries so that it would be a win –win situation for both countries.

What if hard working U.S. citizens wanted to cross the border illegally to pick nuts and fruits? Well they would be at an economic disadvantage and probably would not cross the border. Why? Well Mexico doesn’t teach Spanish as a Second Language (SSL) classes, the U.S. citizen wouldn’t be able to get free medical care, won’t be able to abuse the SSN and gain free benefits since they have no social security system to speak of, and of course there is a lack of sanctuary cities in Mexico for U.S. citizens that enter illegally. But why doesn’t the ACLU step in to help these hard working Americans that want to work illegally in Mexico picking fruits and nuts from these trees, after all the A in ACLU stands for American, and Mexico is part of North America and NAFTA? The answer, it’s all about big business. With 20 million illegal people in the U.S. the ACLU doesn’t want to and jeopardize their profits by ticking off all of the potential customers that would pay a fortune to come here!

Posted by: Apple Location: Borderfence on Jun 30, 2008 at 05:30 PM
Hopefully they will plant a diversity of fruit and nut trees. This way they will generate additional food sources to help feed the starving and also to sell for a profit. This also has the following benefits: 1) Illegal aliens have an affinity for diversity, so having a diversity of trees will guarantee the success of the program (just like many other diversity based programs)! 2) If Mexican tomatoes are tainted with salmonella, they will still have additional revenue generating food sources. 3) Lazy Americans will not be applying for the jobs so they should be able to command higher wages and perhaps they can become a multi-billion just like Carlos Slim Helu.

My daughter is a Corpman,(Medical Personnel)in the Navy taking care of our wounded Soldiers in Iraq. When she was working in her Military clinic here in the States, she used to tell me how Illegals came over here, got prime Medical attention AT NO COST or they came and got prime medical attention and skipped the U.S. owing thousands. Meanwhile we U.S. Citizens have to pay, pay, and pay all of our medical bills or get hounded to death by collectors. I know...!! Why don't we charge admission fees in the thousands at the border. Oh yeah, we have to catch them crossing. I also agree that we have a hard time taking care of ourselves, much less try to "stretch" the o' mighty dollar by taking care of those that use and abuse the States. God Bless America

Americans are too proud to work?? The people making these BS comments sound like they're 10 yrs old. The U.S.A. was not built into a prosperous super power by people who need SIESTAS every afternoon like Mexico. How about putting ALL the illegals here in the MILITARY and send them to Iraq or Afghanistan for at least 2 years. LET THEM FIGHT FOR THIS COUNTRY that they think they have the right to live in!! Only then, may the U.S. owe them some rights of the Born & Naturalized citizens. Otherwise, we owe them NOTHING!! Hey, long gone is the Ellis Island days from the turn of the last century. The U.S. can't economically handle this mass illegal load of an already over populuated nation. But at least those immigrants back then, from around the world, did NOT sneak in illegally. They all learned ENGLSIH and had no "special treatment". The laws of our country are not for any ethnic group to CHOOSE TO OBEY!!

NOT all the immigrants are from Mexico.. i wish all americans stop eating at the mexican restuarants.. HOW you like that! i just wish people stop hating so much and get on with your own life!!!!!~

I think it is very unfortunate that we live in a world that is divided like this. We are all human, therefore we are all equal. Judging by the majority of these comments, which are cruel and speak of the Hispanic race as if they are merely disposable pieces of trash, I think we've lost sight that they're people just like you and I. As the old saying goes, "Treat people the way you would want to be treated", and I'm sure you, like me, would want to be treated with respect. I will continue to pray that we may live together and not be so hateful and judgemental of one another, that we open our minds and our hearts to understand where the other side is coming from, and most importantly, that we all respect one another for who we are and where we come from. The world would be a dull place without so much color :). God Bless you all!

Ok for Anonymous.. you sound like an idiot. We don't mind people coming here for work... they just need to do it the RIGHT WAY. Illegal is ILLEGAL. I have heard the same point you are pathetically trying to get across a million times. Yes, they do work a lot of people don't want to, but so do many americans. We have plenty of people to do that type of work, but the owners of the companies would rather pay illegal immagrants bc it's cheaper. So really everyone, let's start looking at the people doing the hiring. They are just as guilty as the illegals. I think it's rediculous that you are trying to convince people it is ok for illegal immagrants to be here. Just like I would have to go through a lnng process to be able to live in another country, these immigrants should have to do the same thing. I am not a racistby any means... but there is a right way and a wrong way of doings things. Sneaking into our country and then US citizens paying for their free life is WRONG.

To thoughtless. I grew p in the Rio Grande Valley. II also worked in a hopsital there for a few years. The Er is full of mexican citizens giving birth. They have those medicaid papers signed nearly before the kid is out.All it takes is a P.O box in the US to get medicaid, AFDC and food stamps. I know what i'm talking about because I saw it EVERY day. I was also a child who rode the bus 7 miles to the border to pick up kids who were born in the US but lived in Mexico, so therefor had a "right" to a free American education. My first 3 years of school in the US was taught in spanish because I was the monority there. 95% of the school was spanish speaking. For anonymous, yeah, us lazy Amercans are footing the bill for all the illegals who are doing the HARD work. Getting young girls pregnant and living behind their skirts while THEY get government money. Buying steaks at the local grocery store and putting them into an Escalade. But WE are the lazy ones.

SEVERAL COMMENTS- IF THEY PLANT THE TREES WHO IS GOING TO WATER THEM,ALL THE ILLEGALS ARE OVER HERE! SECOND, IF THEY HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO PLANT 400,00 TREES WHY CAN'T THEY TAKE CARE OF THEIR OWN PEOPLE.AS FOR THE EAGLE PASS MAYOR,MAYBE THE IRS NEEDS TO SEE HOW HE DOES HIS TAXES IF HE IS WORRIED ABOUT NOT LETTING THE ILLEGALS OVER HERE TO SPEND THEIR CASH THAT HE DOESN'T REPORT? WE ARE TIRED OF SUPPORTING THE ILLEGALS THAT COME OVER HERE AND WE CAN'T EVEN TAKE CARE OF OURSELVES,LAST TIME I LOOKED WE DON'T OWE ANY OF THEM A DIME.

Lashisha, criminals...THATS what they are!! Weather or not they have a criminal record they are criminals just by illegally coming into our country! Also, SS benefits and whatnot will be cut one day because all the illegals are coming in here, working for $1.50/HR AND not paying taxes...but we are still paying for thier welfar and what have it...and one day soon we will be paying for them and there 33 childrens medical care!! I dont care how hard they work, if it wasent them taking all the construction jobs, my fathers construction business wouldent be doing so poorly...because he abides by the law and doesent hire illegals. They have taken our jobs, they are ruining our economy...dont tell me they do the jobs americans wont do...thats ridiculous.

Posted by: Legal Citizen Location: TX on Jun 30, 2008 at 02:10 PM
Let the government cut Lashisha's SS benefits, food stamps and all her welfare so she can't afford internet access to spread her IDIOCY! What does she think the word "ILLEGAL" means? It's NOT the U.S.'s job to take care of Mexico's citizens.

Posted by: susiebw Location: kempner on Jun 30, 2008 at 01:48 PM
Finally Mexico is doing something "green". That's a good idean to hide the fence if they don't like it, but why is it a shame if it's OUR fence? It ain't THEIR fence. What really fuels animosity is our taxes having to support all the illegals! That sure stirs mine up.

Posted by: Bek on Jun 30, 2008 at 01:37 PM
GREAT POINT, annonymous.

Posted by: Sur on Jun 30, 2008 at 01:35 PM
I agree with the posts from anonymous. I know both sides have their views and standpoints, but it's disgusting to me how hateful many of you are being. There is no need to be so hateful against a race of gracious, hard-working, good-hearted people who simply want a better life. No one can help where they were born, and in my opinion we "legals" are very fortunate to have been born in the great USA. Put yourself in their shoes and see if you wouldn't want something better for yourself and your family.. Of course, as with any race, there are bad apples, but it is simply biased to assume that all Mexicans are "parasite" criminals that cause all of our nations problems.

Posted by: Lashisha on Jun 30, 2008 at 12:23 PM
I'm not too concerned about this mumbo jumbo. After all it's like someone said "they'll come back" and like any other barriers, they will find a solution. I don't understand why Americans have so much hatred towards Mexicans or hispanics in general. Yes some are criminals but most hard workers. Just like Americans, there's ugly in all races. Remember "God don't like ugly". How many MEXICANS do you see in the corner of richland mall with a sign saying "please help me I'm homeless"?? I never have. Give them the same advice you would a MEXICAN, go work for your food!! Mexicans actually work for and pick their food. I pray for you ignorant people out there. Let the government cut off SS benefits, food stamps, or any other type of welfare and we'll see who really gets out there to work. We would probably see more PROUD AMERICANS out there holding the homeless signs, but MEXICANS I really doubt it! Working people that's what they are.

to anonymous. its hard to find anyone but a mexican in the construction trade. the mexicans have knocked the bottome out of the construction market.but hey , when 20 of them pile up in a house and eat beans and tortillas i guess it doesnt take much money to get by on.

Really how many jobs that YOU applied for was 'taken' by a Mexican? Americans wouldn't do the jobs that Mexicans are doing to put food on the table.. How many Americans you know work on the fields actually picking the fruits and vegetables? How many Americans do you see doing the actual labor in contructing homes, sidewalks and roads.. Bottom line Americans are too Proud to work hard. LOOK AROUND! There is bad in every race. Most people that cross illegally ARE the people who are here to work. If America wasn't so saturated w/drug users the crime rate wouldn't be so high. Suppling the demand at any price is all that is happening in America. Same goes w/the fuel issue. Mexicans actually pay the taxes too, each time they spend their $ (gas, alcohol, cigerettes, rent etc.) without 'benefits'. -- Minimize the Demand the problem will fix itself. -- Unemployed Americans -- go get a job servicing people (housekeeper, care giver, field picker) Druged Americans -- Come clean and be productive

I hear any of you complaining when roads are being built and housing being built and fruit being picked to give to your familys. and any other hard labor that none of our folks here wont do cause there to lazy they rather just apply for Food Stamps and TANF and have us working folk pay for it. You see more people other than mexicans asking for help paying there bills and asking for food stamps. These people rather work for what they have. THEY KNOW WHAT HARD WORK MEANS. If only other had that in them we wouldnt have so many people of Government assist. that our tax paying dollars goes to while they sit at home waiting on there monthly checks ans stamps to come in. instead of looking for a job, cause McDonalds is always hiring.

To Texas location: If illegals give birth in U.S. to gain citizenship. The illegals should be deported and the child awarded to the State. This would resolve the moms from the real moms. If an illegal U.S. citizen give birth to a child in another country, they don't become auto-citizen of that country. Key word is illegal!

how irritating. i agree with null. maybe not on the whole "die by firing squad" part, only because some of them are women and children who have no choice but to follow the "man of the house" and do as he says. it is rediculous that OUR men and women go to war for THIS country..and then we have these bums who come and use everything that OUR troops are fighting for. from now on the illegal's should be the ones going to war, not our wonderful men and women who have worked so hard only to have everything taken from them. i dont know anyone who is serving, nor do i have a family member who is, but i still stand by our troops 100% as im sure the rest of you do. forget building a wall, build an electric fence..with as much power as possible. maybe then when they turn into a fried burrito they'll re-think jumpin the border. idiots.

Posted by: null on Jun 29, 2008 at 11:51 PM
All illegal immigrants should die by firing squad. Once deported, they just come right back, have a million kids on American soil, and plunder our social system to the point that there are no resources left for actual American citizens and taxpayers. They are using up our hospitals to the point that American's can't get the care they need because there's an illegal alien sucking up all the care as the alien's 54 relatives clog up the waiting room and harrass the staff b/c they are mad staff doesn't speak spanish (and they don't pay a dime). We are being invaded and the national gaurd should be stationed at the border and shoot down anyone on sight who's crossing illegally. There is no such thing as peaceful coexistence with these people who are exploiting our schools and hospitals. Why can't the MILLIONS of aliens band together and reform their own country instead of coming over to here to steal from us?

Posted by: Lory on Jun 29, 2008 at 09:07 PM
I am all for security for citizens of the US. I think we all have a duty to make sure that our friends and neighbors are taken care of. I understand about illegal immigrants and the problems there. I agree that we and they should have to follow rules and regulations. However, I'm wondering about the other side of the issue. What happens to people who come into the US legally and have family on the other side of the River? What about people who are here legally and have immediate family members living just across the border? Will they have to choose between putting food on the table for their family and being at the family table? I don't have an answer for national security. I'm still trying to figure out what I think about the fence. However, I can't help but think that sometimes the legal families are being forgotten in this national debate.

They just want to have some cover so we can't see them trying to break in to our country. These people have no right to get mad at us for protecting the border. The only reason they would care is because they are planning on crossing it illegally. I don't have the right to say what my neighbor does on their property so why do the Mexicans think they have the right to tell us what to do? I don't dislaike Mexicans but a lot of them really do only think about themselves and cheating us out of what we fight and work for and don't care that this is our country not theirs. This really fries my bacon.

Let them plant trees and we should plant land mines on our side. Nothing to big just some toe-poppers. Most countries do this on their borders.

Posted by: LN Location: Robinson on Jun 29, 2008 at 05:36 PM
The whole key to the illegal alien problem is jobs. No one has hangers big enough in Washington to do what is right for OUR country. The fix, and an easy one, is to make it a very expensive problem to hire an illegal. $10,000.00 per day per illegal alien on your payroll, no appeals, no whining, no welfare and enforce it. The next sound you will hear is the illegals leaving to go back to Mexico. And it will be a large sound indeed! Then the government of Mexico will have to take care of their own people instead of letting us do it for them. Their whole concept of living will have to change. Most Mexicans really don't have any leadership skills and such. If the government would start negotiating oil leases on land and ocean property they have and using that income to build their own infrastructure they could be world leaders and have a vastly different standard of living in a few decades. But they are too blind to see it at the moment.

Posted by: Kriminal Location: Jail on Jun 29, 2008 at 04:28 PM
It’s not just the border fence the Mexicans should be protesting but also door locks, bank vaults, pin numbers, security systems, police offers, judges, and jails. Why? Because they just make it that much darn harder to steal cold hard cash needed to earn a decent living. Instead they have to rely on good old fashioned government handouts. Plus if you’re caught and sent to jail, well it just takes all of the fun out of it too.

NOTHING stops these people -- they are planting trees so they can climb over the fence!

Posted by: Texaslegal on Jun 29, 2008 at 12:55 PM
Lets see.. 400,000 trees that equals about 1 tree for every american citizen that has been killed, raped or mamed by these illegal parasites over the last 15 years. We will not need the wall when the new president takes office. Both canidates are out promising them all amnesty right now. Get ready for a fight this problem will just fester until americans have had enough and they try to push amnesty on us again...

Trees by the river its a very bad idea. All the gangs, criminals, drug dealers, prostitutes, its going to be real bad for the good people that are traying to came to the U.S. to make a good living, they're going to be alot of violence, mark my words.

The wall being built by HOmeland Security is not intended (on paper) to keep illegal workers out of the US. It is intended (on paper) to keep terrorists out of the US. The proposed path of this fence will cut through the property of many Americans. The government is using eminent domain to steal American's property. They refuse to come up with a better solution. My question is, if this is supposed to keep terrorists out, then why isn't it being built up north where the terrorists came in at?

Trees? How ironic and funny is that! Apparently tree farming is a trait they bring with them when the come... I say let them build their "green wall" all they want, but when it comes time to finish the fence, cut down the trees on our side of the border and post "No Trespassing" fliers made from those trees, all down the fence line! I'm sick and tired of paying higher tax and medical rates so these illegals can live on easy street! BUILD THE FENCE!

While they're planting their trees, maybe they will clean up the trash thrown all over their river bank. Every border town I've been to, Mexico's side of the river looks like a slum. Not only is there trash everywhere, but women wash clothes in the river. The real environmental shame is Mexico...not our fence!

Hey, Bato! Them trees are for shade. You know it gets hot crossing the border!

I'd like to "plant" some illegals.

Please the only shame is the illegals coming to our country and raising our crime rate and our tax dollars jailing them then sending them back so they can come right back and do it again. Doze the trees down if their on our side....

Let me get this straight...illegals are fleeing from a communist Mexico, and a mexican governor has the nerve to protest our fence? Here's some news for you, Mr. Governor...if you'd take care of your citizens, NONE of this would even be an issue. If Mexico was not so corrupt, there would be no reason for the citizens to want to leave. You'd have yours, we'd have ours and I wouldn't despise illegals immigrants the way I do.

What? It’s interesting that they are protesting the construction of the fence by planting 400,000 trees. Instead they should be planting 400,000 trees in honor of the fence construction, after all the U.S. could have planted cheap Chinese landmines which would have been a cheaper but deadlier solution. Perhaps Carlos Slim Helu (Mexican super billionaire worth approximately $60 billion) can finance the project and pay the tree planters a decent living wage. Perhaps this would solve some of Mexico’s unemployment problems! If anything the Mexicans should instead be protesting the lack of wealth distribution in Mexico while paying the poor slave wages! Mexico should learn to solve its own problems!!! Get rid of the greedy rich bastards and end the corruption!

Of course they are protesting the border fence. they dont want to have to work too hard to come over here to lie and get our government money. The pregnant women cant climb that high to come over here to give birth on American soil to get food stamps and Medicaid.
