(July 1, 2008)--McLennan County jailers appeared before McLennan County Commissioners Court Tuesday to express their concerns about the possibility that jail operations could be turned over to a private contractor.
Jail staff members first laid out their concerns last week, when they told commissioners they were worried about the potential impact of privatization on both their income and their benefits.
McLennan County Judge Jim Lewis told News 10 Tuesday commissioners are considering four options for construction of a new 1000-bed jail he says the county must build.
Tuesday’s inmate count was 1,042, Lewis said, in a facility designed for a maximum population of 800.
The first option involves having a private firm build and operate the new jail, but for the county to continue to run the Highway 6 and downtown jail facilities.
The second involves having a private firm build and operate the new jail and to operate the downtown jail.
The third involves having a private firm build and operate the new jail and to contract with a private firm to operate both the Highway 6 and downtown jails.
The fourth proposal involves a contract with a private firm to build the new jail and tto take over operations for all of the county’s jail facilities.
The court has set a July 8 deadline for proposals.
