(July 2, 2008)—The Department of Public Safety says it will saturate Interstate 35 with troopers starting Thursday morning as the DPS makes a concerted effort to crack down on drunken drivers, speeders and seatbelt violators.

Last year during the extended holiday weekend from July 3 to July 8, troopers made 689 DWI arrests and issued 10,445 speeding citations.

They also issued 2,167 tickets for seatbelt violations and 577 for child safety seat violations.

Troopers are participating in the national Combined Accident Reduction Effort, or Operation CARE.

“If the thought of killing or injuring others on the road while you’re driving drunk is not enough to make you drive sober, just remember that our troopers will be looking to arrest you,” said Col. Thomas A. Davis Jr, director of the DPS.

“Many drunk drivers think that they are sober enough to drive and discover that they are wrong when they’re arrested and taken to jail.”
