(July 4, 2008)--Traffic deaths in the state dropped in 2007 for the fifth consecutive year, despite an increase in the number of cars and drivers on state roadways, the Texas Department of Transportation says.
The department says the 3,422 traffic deaths last year reflect a 2.7 percent decrease from the previous year.
More than 20 million cars are registered in the state, up from 14.2 million in 2000.
Transportation department spokesman Mark Cross says the decrease in deaths is because of improved safety on the drivers' part, on the manufacturing of car safety, stepped-up public safety announcements and stepped-up enforcement.
Texas Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Lisa Block says there's only one trooper to patrol every 120 miles of state highways, so driver cooperation is essential.
