HEWITT (November 28, 2013) A southbound 18-wheeler early Thursday morning blew a tire, crashed into a concrete barrier and burst into flames on Interstate 35 near Hewitt.
Traffic was blocked for a time and as late as 9 a.m. was still restricted to only one lane, a Department of Pubic Safety trooper said.
The accident happened just a little after 5 a.m. as the truck was driving south at mile marker 328, the trooper said.
The crash ruptured a 200-gallon fuel tank and leaking diesel from that tank is what caught fire, the trooper said.
The cab of the truck and a portion of the trailer were destroyed in the fire but the two people inside were able to escape without injury.
