California Execution Temporarily On Hold

Stanley Tookie Williams Executed

Stanley Tookie Williams Executed

The execution of California death row inmate Michael Morales was temporarily on hold Tuesday after two anesthesiologists who were required by a judge to be there to minimize his pain refused to take part because of ethical concerns.

Morales was scheduled to die Tuesday morning for the rape and murder of a teenage girl.

But the two doctors issued a statement saying they're concerned about a requirement that they intervene if Morales woke up or appeared to be in pain during the process.

The prison has until one minute before midnight to execute Morales.

After that, the "death warrant" expires and officials would have to go back to the trial judge who imposed the death sentence in 1983 for another warrant.
