Closing arguments were set to begin Thursday at Fort Bliss in the court-martial of Army Reserve Sgt. Alan Driver, who’s accused of abusing detainees at a U.S. complex in Afghanistan.
Both sides rested Wednseday.
A prosecutor earlier said Driver abused his power as a military policeman at the detention center in Afghanistan.
But Driver's attorney said the soldier, from the Cincinnati-based 377th MP Company, was putting his life at risk to guard dangerous terrorists.
Driver has denied the charges. He did not testify.
A jury of three enlisted soldiers and five officers is hearing the case.
Driver is the last of the reservists to be tried in the abuse case.
Only one soldier has been convicted, and he was spared jail time.
Two soldiers pleaded guilty, were sent to prison for a few months and then were kicked out of the Army.
Cases against three soldiers, including Capt. Christopher Beiring, were abandoned in part because investigators in pretrial hearings found no evidence of wrongdoing.
Four other soldiers were acquitted.
