WACO (December 13, 2013) Waco firefighters battled a major building fire early Friday morning that engulfed a nightspot in West Waco.
The alarm was turned in at about 6:40 a.m. at PJ’s Bar and Grill, in the 7000 block of Sanger Avenue and heavy flames could be seen from some distance away as firefighters arrived.
A cleaning crew had just gone inside the building to clean up when crew leader Daniel Romer smelled smoke.
Within three minutes, Romer said, flames were shooting through the roof and the building was engulfed.
Romer, his wife and another worker were able to escape the building without being injured and immediately called for help.
Romer is a volunteer firefighter with the Aquilla Fire Department.
The first units on the scene reported heavy smoke and flames coming from the single-story building.
The Sanger Avenue bridge over Loop 340 was open to traffic but the extension of Sanger with access on to and off of Loop 340 was blocked to traffic.
