(July 5, 2008)--A Fourth of July collision involving five motorcycles killed two people and injured five others.

The accident happened Friday near the Sam Rayburn Dam in East Texas, about 130 miles northeast of Houston.

The Department of Public Safety said Robert Benjamin Boren of Galveston was heading west on Recreational Road 255 on his motorcycle when the bike crossed the centerline and collided with another motorcycle on which Donald Mitchell Jackson of Wells was riding.

Both were killed.

Another Harley Davidson cyclist, A. W. Wright of Lufkin, drove through the crash scene and struck Jackson.

Two other cyclists who followed Wright also crashed.

Wright was taken to Lufkin's Memorial Hospital where he was treated for a broken leg.

Four others, including two passengers, were treated at Jasper Memorial Hospital and later released.

One of the passengers was a 12-year-old boy.

Boren was not wearing a helmet, and it was not immediately clear whether Jackson was wearing one.

Jimmy - we were also out in that area riding our bikes and for some unknown reason we decided not to take R255 - and you are right - it is gods will. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your friends.

Of course you should wear a helmet but not just any kind. You need to save between $1000 to $1500 for riding gear and even that won't protect you from brain trauma if you hit an object and your brain swells. If you think the accident is bad wait till you have to spend a couple of years recovering and then be in debt close to or more than a million and thats with insurance. If you're lucky you might have disability but if you don't have a power of attorney drawn pre-accident then what good is any of all this. So Gear, Donor Info, Full coverage medical, dental, vision, disability and legal documents entrusted to a loved one who will kill themself helping you to recover and that includes watching you rehab through much pain and suffering and then we call it a miracle you are sill alive. Guess what? Its all in Gods Hands and only You can Save yourself with His Word and your Faith in Him the Almighty. Keep the prayer alive and thats all you have left.

LOWER THE GAS AND NOT AS MANY INEXPERIENCED RIDERS WILL BE ON THE ROAD KILLING OTHERS.

Is this perhaps why we call them 'brain buckets'? Both my daughter and son-in-law have motorcycles, my son and his two boys race motorcycles. Guess which ones always wear helmets? Sometimes helmet or not, death can occur....but lots of times a helmet will save one from head/brain injury that would otherwise have been fatal, or leave the rider in a vegatative state. I send my heartfelt sympathy to the families of these riders.

If there is a seatbelt law for drivers there should be a helmet law for riders! I have witness many motorcylce accidents in my 63 years and rarely did the helmetless rider survive an accident.

Helmets ONLY protect your head, they do not stop broken necks or lacerated arteries from broken bones.

I pray for the young people injured and killed in these motorcycle accidents. This sounds very morbid, but when I see a cyclist riding without a helmet, I refer to the rider as a future transplant donor. Their skull is so fragile and brain damage usually occurs when one is in an accident and isn't wearing a helmet. The lung that I received was from a cyclist that was brain dead after an accident. The rest of his body had minor injury and his chances for full recovery was great if only he was wearing a helmet. If you ride a motorcycle, please consider being an organ donor. Make sure your love ones know that you want to donate your organs upon your death because they will make the final decision.
