(July 6, 2008)—About 50 firefighters, some of whom had worked through the night monitoring hot spots at the scene of an earlier fire, were able to control a fast-moving grassfire Sunday afternoon south of Killeen that forced authorities to close some roads.

Police closed roads in the area of Featherline and Chaparral at the height of the fire, including portions of Stagecoach Road and Chaparral between Slawson and Featherline.

The West Side Strike Force, consisting of units from several departments, was mobilized to fight the fire, which was fanned by gusty south winds and just before 2 p.m. a call was put out for assistance for the county’s East Side Strike Force, as well.

That call was cancelled about 15 minutes later, but units from other departments were headed to the scene to support the crews already there.

It’s the second major wildfire this weekend in Bell County.

A hard-to-reach fire Saturday blackened more than a hundred acres near Stillhouse Hollow Lake.

Crews were able to contain the fire in a low-lying area between Lake Cliff Drive and Pawnee Drive, but some firefighters remained in the area through the night to watch for hot spots.

Crews from Harker Heights, Killeen Copperas Cove, Belton, Fort Hood and the Texas Forest Service battled the flames, which were fueled by driftwood from last year’s flood.

Helicopters were used for water drops to douse flames in areas firefighters on the ground could not reach.

No homes were damaged.
