WACO (January 20, 2014) A Waco man was fighting for life Monday morning after an overnight shooting at a north Waco apartment complex.

The victim, who also is a suspect in the shooting, was in surgery early Monday at a Waco hospital but Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said his updated condition was not yet available.

Police were sent at about 2 a.m. to an apartment complex in the 1100 block of North 6th Street after a caller reported a shooting.

When officers arrived they found a man in the parking lot who had suffered a gunshot wound to the head, Swanton said.

Johnny Ray Boyd, Jr. of Waco was transported to Hillcrest Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.

Boyd was listed in critical condition.

Officers recovered a handgun they believe was used in the shooting.

Swanton said a woman reported her boyfriend had pulled a pistol, pointed it at her and pulled the trigger, but the pistol failed to fire.

She told officers the man then went into the parking lot, put the pistol to his own head and pulled the trigger again.

The second time the weapon discharged and the man was struck in the head.

The woman told police the two were involved in some type of argument.

The woman was not injured.
