(July 10, 2008)--A man who reportedly carried tools that could have been used to steal copper is dead after a Garland business owner's son shot him.

Garland police say Edward Preston Hickey, 43, died early Thursday after a 25-year-old man who said he saw Hickey climbing on top of his father’s Bargain Town Variety & Furniture Store shot him.

The business owner's son told police the store was having problems with copper thieves and a decision was made to guard the shop from its roof.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports the dead man had assorted tools that could have been used for stealing copper.

Police don't intend to file charges, but the case will be referred to a grand jury for review.

All people have a right to protect their property. Unfortunately, some lawyer will try to determine if he was justified in his actions. If someone is one your property, equipped to steal or do damage, I don't have a problem with the use of deadly force. Although they have rights, so does the property owner, and his rights should prevail, always!

if this would happen more, then i am almost positive that the crime rate would drop, and our prisons and jails wouldn't become so overcrowded, that would drop some of the costs of taxes as well, if people like this would just get out and work and try to make an honest living, they wouldn't have to pay an ultimate price like this thug did, and the people of this state and country should not try to blame anyone else but the person that committed the act, we all know the difference from right and wrong.

Maybe that will make future thieves think twice about stealing things that don't belong to them!

Don't tell Sheila jackson Lee about this case. Especially if the robber wasn't white. I am proud of perople for protecting their property, the robbers in Houston and this guy both got what was coming to them.
