Texas Soldier Dies In Training Accident

(March 13, 2006)—A soldier killed in a training accident in Hawaii Friday was Staff Sgt. Oscar Rodriguez of the South Texas town of Beeville, military officials said Monday.

The 27-seven-year-old Rodriguez was killed during live fire training at Pohakuloa Training Area.

Four other soldiers were injured in the incident.

The troops were preparing for a summer deployment to Iraq.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

Army spokesman Kendrick Washington says a military safety team was on the scene Saturday and that all live-fire training had been suspended.

The Hawaii County Fire Department's accident report said the soldiers were hurt by a munitions malfunction.

Rodriguez joined the Army in January 1996 and was assigned to Schofield Barracks in Central Oahu in October 2002.
