(July 11, 2008)—Amanda Elmore, 22, of Temple, who was critically injured in an accident on June 29 that left two other people dead, lost her fight for life Friday at Scott & White Hospital in Temple.

Xantavia Phillips, 23, whom police identified as a Fort Hood soldier, and Leslie Spear, 23, of Coppell died in the collision around 3:45 a.m. on June 29 on Highway 190 about one mile east of the Clear Creek Exit in Killeen, police said.

The two drivers were taken to Carl Darnall Army Medical Center at Fort Hood where they were both pronounced dead about 2 hours later.

Elmore was taken to Scott & White.

Phillips was westbound on Highway 190 in a 2003 Cadillac DeVille when it collided head on with Spear’s 2005 Ford Mustang, which the DPS said appeared to have been headed east in the westbound lane.

I was on my way home and I was the first one to witness the accident. I swerved out of the way, stopped, and called 911. It is very dark out there and if you are unfamiliar with the road it can be very confusing, so I don't think alcohol was the factor. My prayers are with the families who lost their loved ones.

I am one of Leslie's friends, the driver of the car amanda was in. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family. Leslie's blood alcohol level was 0 according to the report (I mention this only to end debate and comments to those assuming facts they dont know). This was a case of confusion, darkness, and unfamiliarity on poorly signed roads. We know what amandas family and friends are going through right now and we are praying for you all. God Bless.

I can see if they were coming from CTC over the Bell Tower bridge the entrance ramp to the highway is closed. so you can't turn left, maybe they turned right thinking they could get on the highway, or maybe disoriented. that's the only place I can think of them getting on the wrong side of the highway through the barriers.

Supergirl, where does the alcohol statement come from? Why was that your first assumption? No where in any of the reports is there any mention of alcohol. It was very early in the morning...maybe the poor girl fell asleep. A classmate of mine lost his life in that manner his senior year in high school. True, alcohol plays a large role in many accidents, however, I don't see where that was the case here. As for the families of those lost, my most sincerest of condolences to you and you are all in my thoughts and prayers.

I was only familiar with Amanda for a short period of time through our similar occupations. She was a sweet young lady that gave her best to those she cared for at work. I send out my prayers for all who were involved in this horrible accident and to their loved ones that are now left with only their memories.

I just have comment on some of these blogs. First off, thanks to all who care and offer prayers. But I can tell you all this much. Amanda was NOT drinking. She had NO alcohol in her blood. I dont know about Leslie, I didnt even know her. But as far as I'm concerned shes another one who lost her life, and now I know what true grief is from losing my youngest child. I dont know how I'm going to cope with her no longer being in my life. Please,,,,If you know any one of these 3 people, dont dwell on the bad stuff. Prayer for them and their families. God bless you all

There have been lives lost and people are grieving. No alcohol was not involved and it does not matter what happened. All that matters is helping these families through this.

I for one, have driven that road, and even when it is not under construction it is a horrendous experience. I've found alternative roads to travel when I am in that area. I'd say some fault lies with all drivers on our road ways, as well as those who are in charge of road safety. Life is a shared experience and we all have a hand in how it is lived for our selves and everyone else we share this world with.

As far as I am aware it is unknown by anyone outside the DPS officers what the circumstances were. It was observed in this articles (http://www.kwtx.com/home/headlines/22712869.html#comments) comments, that the road construction, one drivers unfamiliarity with the roads etc. may have played a part in the tragedy. Regardless, three I'm sure wonderful people have lost their lives. I knew Amanda, and she was a wonderful young lady. Thoughtful, a caregiver and a loving human being. It was my pleasure to have known her.

No one knows for sure about the involvement of alcohol, so how can there be an outrage? Why not stick to the pertinent information. A family is now having to cope with the death of their child/sister/relative/friend. They are in need of comfort and peace, not comments of speculation, especially when you don't have all the facts. I do hope that in their own time they are able to find peace and understanding. It seems to me that Amanda should be remembered for all of the beautiful things she was, not the terrible way she died.

This is terrible. 3:45am and going the wrong way - was alcohol involved? Where's the outrage about drinking and driving?
