(March 20, 2006)—Federal officials granted $3.3 million Monday to reimburse an East Texas electric utility for the costs of restoring electricity after Hurricane Rita.
Texas Senators Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn say the money covers costs for Livingston-based Sam Houston Electric Cooperative.
“East Texas suffered severe damage from Hurricane Rita. This funding will directly support the efforts of this company that quickly restored electricity to residents in the area,” Hutchison said.
Livingston is about 70 miles northeast of Houston.
The money reimburses the costs of overtime, equipment and rented generators for 1, 200 workers who helped restore damaged electrical distribution lines.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has granted Texas $534 million in public assistance grants to cover costs of repairs or recovery from hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
The agency also has provided $739 million in reimbursements to individuals and small businesses, which receive loans.
