LORENA (March 19, 2014) Lorena police were asking citizens to contact the department if they had recent contact with a dog that has tested positive for rabies.

The dog, a white Labrador retriever mix, was picked up in the downtown area on March 10 and taken to the animal shelter in Waco, where over the next few days it became sick and eventually died, Lorena police Chief Tom Dickson said Wednesday.

After the dog died it was sent to Austin where it tested positive for rabies, Dickson said.

Anyone who might have had contact with the dog between March 7 and March 11 is asked to call Lorena police at (254) 857-9614.

Dickson said anyone who might have petted the dog or had other close contact with it could have been exposed.
