Local City Council Considers Special Election To Replace Ousted Mayor

(July 14, 2008)—The Copperas Cove City Council is considering a resolution setting a special election to coincide with the general election on Nov. 4 to replace former Copperas Cove Mayor Roger O’Dwyer, whom the council voted 6-1 on March 25 to oust.

The council said O’Dwyer repeatedly violated the Copperas Cove city charter by giving orders to city employees.

The council has to set an election date no later than July 24.

O’Dwyer told the Copperas Cove Leader Press last week he plans to run for the office.

It’s at least possible that Copperas Cove voters could also decide on Nov. 4 whether to oust four of the six council members who voted to remove O’Dwyer.

Copperas Cove activist Diane Steele is seeking signatures on a recall petition for council members Mark Peterson, Ray Don Clayton, Bob Reeves and Charlotte Heinze.

The other two members who voted to remove O’Dwyer, Fred Harris and Frank Somera, did not seek re-election in May.

If Steele gets the required number of signatures and the petition is verified, then the recall election would also be held on Nov. 4.
