Good morning, it’s Tuesday, July 15, the 197th day of 2008. There are 169 days left in the year. The forecast calls for clouds, a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms, and highs in the mid 90s.

Sixty-five years ago today, on July 15, 1943 (some sources put the date on July 14, 1943), singer Jules Bledsoe of Waco died in Hollywood, Calif. after performing at a war bond drive. Bledsoe was born in Waco in 1899, graduated from Bishop College in 1918, and while studying medicine at Columbia University, was urged by friends and teachers to study music. He did, and the rest is history. He debuted in New York in 1924 and his performance in the role of “Joe” in Jerome Kern’s “Showboat,” made “Ol’ Man River” an American classic. The music and lyrics are inscribed on his tombstone at Waco’s Greenwood Cemetery.
