(July 15, 2008)--East Texas-based chicken producer Pilgrim's Pride says it's cutting 600 jobs at an Arkansas plant and closing a distribution center in El Paso.

Pilgrim’s Pride operates a processed chicken plant in Waco that employs more than 600 workers.

The Pittsburg-based company says the chicken industry continues to face "unprecedented challenges."

Pilgrim's Pride said it will consolidate its tray-pack chicken business from its El Dorado, Ark. based processing plant into six other facilities and said it will cut 600 jobs by Sept. 19.

The company didn’t identify the facilities that would absorb the track-pack business.

Pilgrim's Pride will continue to run the Arkansas facility as a supply plant.

"Since March, we have been conducting a thorough review of all our production facilities to ensure we are operating as efficiently as possible in response to the unprecedented challenges facing our company and our industry," said Clint Rivers, Pilgrim's Pride president and chief executive officer.

"We are confident that the changes announced today, which conclude the formal review of our operations, will help position Pilgrim's Pride as a stronger competitor.”

It also plans to close the El Paso center within 60 days.

The distribution center employs 34 workers.

"While the decision to close or consolidate locations is always difficult, we believe the actions we are announcing today are absolutely necessary for our business and our company," Rivers said.

In the past year, the cost of animal feed has become more expensive because of rising prices for corn.

Some meat producers have cut back on production to help counter the higher costs.

That's what happens when you get a Republican in office.I would rather hear about a president having an affair than listening to everyone talk about the price of gas and being layed off. Yes he was wrong for what he did but we will not be held responsible for his actions. It was nothing out of my pocket like it is now.

They must be having to pay more in labor, due to all the raids by ICE for Illegal Aliens (Mexican Nations)

It's probably due to the fact that so many of their plants are raided by ICE and they keep being fined for having illegal aliens (Mexican Nationals) working in their plants using fake SS cards
