(July 16, 2008)— Bernard Carl Vieregge III, 34, of Waco was in custody Wednesday evening after a soldier walked out of a Waco business in the 2200 block of Austin Avenue and interrupted the attempted robbery of a courier.

The 27-year-old courier had just gotten out of her vehicle just before 3 p.m. Wednesday when a man came up, grabbed her from behind in a choke-hold and demanded money, police said.

The woman was carrying a small bag that contained assorted papers and a small amount of cash, police said.

She refused to give the robber the bag and he again demanded it and said he had a gun.

That’s when the soldier, whose name was not immediately available, interrupted.

He ran the would-be robber off.

Police launched a search for the suspect, and later found him on top of a building at the intersection of South 25th Street and Franklin Avenue.

They arrested him after he climbed off the roof, but had to use a Taser to subdue him after he tried to get away, police said.

He did not have a gun.

Paramedics checked Vieregge out at the scene.

Officers then took him to the McLennan County Jail.

Charges were pending Wednesday night.

Yes, thank you for a job well done. I wish people would do this more often! To THANKFUL: Was the accident that involved your boyfriend in 97 or 98 in Georgetown? If so, I was there and never got to tell them thank you, and would love the opportunity. Thanks.

Well hopefully this soldiers willingness to "help" out will not go unnoticed. I am sure he did it and doesnt expect to be recognized but it would be nice if his chain of command would do so. My boyfriend without thinking attempted to save a young ladies life who had been hit by a car while in the Army. His chain of command repeatedly lost his paperwork for his ARCOM (no he didnt expect it but they promised it). So whoever you are I hope you read this cause I want to tell you THANK YOU for a job well done then and always.
