(July 16, 2008)— Bernard Carl Vieregge III, 34, of Waco was in custody Wednesday evening after a soldier walked out of a Waco business in the 2200 block of Austin Avenue and interrupted the attempted robbery of a courier.
The 27-year-old courier had just gotten out of her vehicle just before 3 p.m. Wednesday when a man came up, grabbed her from behind in a choke-hold and demanded money, police said.
The woman was carrying a small bag that contained assorted papers and a small amount of cash, police said.
She refused to give the robber the bag and he again demanded it and said he had a gun.
That’s when the soldier, whose name was not immediately available, interrupted.
He ran the would-be robber off.
Police launched a search for the suspect, and later found him on top of a building at the intersection of South 25th Street and Franklin Avenue.
They arrested him after he climbed off the roof, but had to use a Taser to subdue him after he tried to get away, police said.
He did not have a gun.
Paramedics checked Vieregge out at the scene.
Officers then took him to the McLennan County Jail.
Charges were pending Wednesday night.
