Burglars Break Into Cars While Firefighters Out On Calls Save Email Print

A | A | A

(July 16, 2008)—Burglars have broken into the personal vehicles of firefighters at a North Waco stationhouse twice in less than a week while firefighters were responding to calls, and now fire and police officials are talking about ways to make stations more secure.

The most recent break-ins occurred around 6 a.m. Wednesday after firefighters at the station at the corner of North 15th Street and Herring Avenue responded to a report of a person choking.

When they returned to the station, they discovered the windows had been broken out of their personal vehicles.

"It angers me because we've got individuals in our department who are laying their lives on the line to serve and protect, and then they are taken advantage of by these people,” said Waco Fire Chief John Johnston.

The president of the Waco Professional Firefighters Association, Robby Bergerson, says there have been similar incidents in the past at other stations, where burglars either waited until firefighters were asleep or dispatched on calls.

Officials said Wednesday some steps have already been taken to improve security at the North Waco station and other security measures will be discussed.

This just saddens me to no end! But that kind of low-life scum does not read the blogs or papers. Is there a fund or insurance to help these great people get their vehicles repaired? Or possibly a shop who would donate the repairs or give a substantial discount to them? God bless all of you!

I agree with Sylvia. Next time they get called out have some guys wait around and when they come back THEN take care of em!! These people are lower than pond scum, i hope next time they break into a car the glass comes back at them and seriously injurs them!!

That just breaks my heart! What those men and women go through day in and out. Then to have some low life worthless scum do that is wretched! I hope they find whoever is responsible!

What in the world?? These people have no respect what-so-ever. What a bunch of low-life's. Karma sucks when you're on the end that these punks are on. In a few weeks we'll see an article about a house burning down due to arson...guess what...it'll be the burglars' house!

I agree with everyone and hope they choke on what they got also. Hope they never need help from any of these people they steal from because I would go the other way.

I say set them up for failure! Next time the station gets a call leave some guys to hose them down! I bet that would stop their little thievery acts!!!!!

This is really sad that these firefighters are risking their lives everyday for the wellbeing of this community and someone has the nerve to steal from them. They need to find these individuals and after locking them up throw away they key. I agree that this is worse than stealing from a church. These men and women risk their lives for us and we should give them the respect that they deserve. I can't fathom what would have been going through their minds to do such a senseless crime. They should be ashamed of themselves.

How scummy can you get? Lowlifes of the highest order. I agree with the other posts- anything you get will be less than what you deserve!

I agree with Outraged! I am a firefighter and this is pathetic! We are on the job away from our families to help you. The Fire Chief could not have said it better. I hope these losers get caught and become someones girlfriend in prison.

I hope those stupid burglars get caught and when their house is on fire they don't get help... as harsh as it sounds. The fire fighters are helping out the community and these idiots don't appreciate it. Get a REAL JOB idiots and know what it's like to work hard.

It takes a special kind of scum to steal from firefighters. Losers.

Posted by: jo Location: waco on Jul 16, 2008 at 06:49 PM
What a bunch of lowlife's. I hope they choke on what they stole.

Posted by: Tony Location: Waco on Jul 16, 2008 at 06:07 PM
This is a shame but I'm not the least bit surprised this happened at the 15th station. We have a lot of bad areas in Waco but this area has to be one of the worst for leaving unattended vehicles of public servants.

Posted by: LN Location: Robinson on Jul 16, 2008 at 05:38 PM
This rates right down there with stealing from a church. The lowest of lows. I hope they catch these scumbags and plaster their sorry faces all over the news to shame them and their families. Then make them stand in front of the firefighters and apologize right before they go to prison for a very long time.
