Registered Sex Offenders Arrested For Using MySpace Save Email Print

A | A | A

(July 17, 2008)—The Texas Attorney General’s Office Cyber Crimes and Fugitive units have arrested five registered sex offenders for using the social networking site MySpace.com in violation of the terms of their release.

Investigators arrested Charles Cathey, 52, of San Antonio on July 1 for using the Internet in violation of his release terms.

Cathey was convicted of aggravated sexual assault of a 7-year-old child and sentenced to 35 years in prison in 1988.

Daniel Louis Trowbridge, 47, was arrested July 1 in Seguin.

He was convicted of indecency with a child in 1980 in Travis County. The victim was an 11-year-old girl.

Scott Charles Spencer, 39, was arrested July 1 in Alvarado.

He was convicted of indecency with a child by sexual contact in 1990 in Johnson County. His victim was a 12-year-old girl.

Thomas Lyman Warren, 64, arrested July 1 in Houston.

He was convicted of injury to a child in 1984 in Harris County. His victim was 2-years-old.

Joel Wayne Jones, 40, arrested July 2 in Port Arthur.

He was convicted of indecency with a child by sexual contact in 1994 in Jefferson County. His victim was an 8-year-old girl.

The arrests came after Attorney General Greg Abbott subpoenaed sex offenders’ user profile from MySpace.com.

“Each of the registered sex offenders arrested during this operation were originally convicted of crimes involving young children,” Abbott said.

“Despite clear legal prohibitions, all five of these sex predators accessed MySpace.com. Parents and children alike must remain vigilant about the dangers posed by online sex predators.”

“These arrests reflect MySpace.com’s ongoing willingness to work cooperatively with law enforcement.

“However, until MySpace.com and other social networking sites implement true age verification software, dangerous sex offenders will continue using these Web sites to prey upon young children,” Abbott said.

We can never make bullies and sexual predators go away. We need to create laws to address this and then we have to enforce them. Until then, it is up to all of us to do all we can to protect our children while they are online. When I became aware of everything my son was subjected to online, I did some research and found an age appropriate socially responsible website for children ages 5-18. This site requires a child's school verify his or her identification before they can become a member. This site is content monitored, cyber bullying controlled, even has tutoring available. All the employees must have a level 2 background check. This site is free to its users. The site for parents, teachers, law enforcement is http://www.safewave.org and the site for children is http://www.iland5.com

There is no law in Texas. My daughter once attended school in Cove, and not 1 but 2 registared sex offenders moved in right across the street fromt the school, and next door to a day care center. We as parents let everybody in the neighborhood know, the people at the crosswalk knew. I even contacted the actually owner of the house since he moved out of state and a reality company was handling it. Nothing seemed to work. Every parent made it known that we wanted them out of our neighborhood! They finally moved back to where they came from since home was accepting of what they did. If you know they live in your neighborhood, watch them. Let them know, within the law, that you do not want them there. Keep the kids safe. There people are pigs!

What's the nature of their game? It has been said here. It's M-O-N-E-Y. The system makes more money off of people who are out than in. Let's make a pay-per-view spectacle of executions to take the pressure off of the death sentence. That will take care of these losers and make some money for the big dogs. Yours, Satan

First, be sure the judges who sentence these perverts have the backbone to throw the book at them. I was very dissapointed that raping a child was not seen as worthy of the death penalty in Louisiana by the Supreme Court. Aren't you? To me, this is the same as murder. I didn't know the Supreme Court made laws for states, only interpreted them. What's up with that? Let's build enough prisons so none of these child molesters never get out. Never give them probation. I also don't understand how criminals have access to the internet in prison.

All these people need to be casterated. Unfortunately, these scumbags may serve a few years and then they are let out to pick up where they left off. Parents need to be vigilant in keeping up with what their children are doing on the internet. I have the passwords to all of my child's accounts and I check them daily. I check her emails, chats, and so on. I watch over her shoulder when she is online. Parents, you can not be too careful. These perverts will coninue getting out and we must continue watching what our children are doing online.

have you ever visited the sex offender website? it's insane! some guy rapes a 7-yr old, gets 20 yrs and is out in 2. and lives next door to you. it's because the state doesn't make money off of these predators being behind bars, just when they are on probation. i heard today some 19-yr old was sentenced to 8 years for raping a 12-yr old. how is that justice? even if he spent 8 years in prison (which he WON'T) it's not even close to what should happen to him. the criminal justice industry is out to make money, not to protect people or punish criminals. until people realize that and speak out against it, nothing is going to change. it's no big deal if someone breaks into your car or house and steals things you worked hard for. it's your fault for having them. ( my family has been told this by the police.) sexual predators clearly aren't much of a threat to anyone, as long as they pay their probation fees. but god forbid you drive with a tailight out or expired registration.

Sad thing is they report this like it is news. WE know they are out there. The powers that be let them lose for US to deal with. Give them the death penalty. These children have a life sentence in reguards to dealing with THEIR crimes. How many parole members or judges etc are being held accountable for letting these freaks back into society?

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Killeen on Jul 18, 2008 at 04:45 PM
How many of you didn't know this? Q. Are registered sex offenders allowed to live or go near places frequented by children such as schools and playgrounds? A. The Texas Sex Offender Registration Program itself does not prohibit registered sex offenders from living or going near places frequented by children. WTF? This was taken off of the TXDPS website. This is wrong! We need to do something to change this! The internet is the least if it they are living right next door to our elementry schools! I can't believe Texas has this kind of lackluster policy! What a waste! Convict them then let them go right back to assult children on their way home from school.

I personally like the Watchdog site that is found at http://www.familywatchdog.us/ It has a nice easy layout and offers the same information.

Exactly "Fran" and "me". Ill repeat my comment from my last post. The idiots who let these people go are just as stupid as the people who commit the crimes. it is PATHETIC. Lets let them out so they can do the same thing over and over. I just dont understand it.

Posted by: susiebw Location: kempner on Jul 18, 2008 at 02:10 PM
they should all still be in jail, not out using computers to find other little ones to molest and rape! What is wrong with judges, parole boards, etc. that these perverts get out.

Posted by: me Location: copperas cove on Jul 18, 2008 at 10:51 AM
Just goes to prove none of them should be out of jail. If you commit a crime on an innocent young child that takes away that innocence and these scum of the earth have they should be shot in town square. This is so ridiculous.

Everyone should check the DPS sex offender database. There are probably registered sex offenders in your neighborhood. You can search by name, zip code, city, and other criteria. The map is especially disturbing. Here's a link to the site: https://records.txdps.state.tx.us/DPS_WEB/Sor/index.aspx And lock your doors, my little darlings!!!

Posted by: Fran Location: W. Texas on Jul 17, 2008 at 02:38 PM
They should have ALL been behind bars and then they would not have has access to myspace! Someone needs to do something about ALL the trash on the network....it just FUELS the fire.

When will you mortals learn that there's no reforming sex offenders. Send them to me. I'll keep the light on.
