(July 18, 2008)—Air Force One touched down Friday evening at Texas State Technical College Airport in Waco after President Bush spent the day dining-and-dashing for cash at private fundraisers in Tucson, Ariz. and Houston, helping raise money for two GOP congressional candidates.
Mr. Bush flew to Tucson Thursday night after surveying wildfires in northern California and speaking at a $850,000 Republican National Committee fundraiser at a winery in Napa Valley.
The president had breakfast for about an hour Friday at a private home in Tucson to help raise more than $500,000 for Tim Bee, president of the Arizona Senate.
Bee is running against Gabrielle Giffords, a moderate Democratic member of Congress from Arizona's 8th congressional district.
Mr. Bush later attended a fundraiser at a private home in Houston for Pete Olson, who's challenging incumbent freshman Congressman Nick Lampson in District 22, which is the district former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay used to represent.
Olson's campaign declined to disclose the amount of money the president helped raise at the private reception in an upscale Houston neighborhood.
Mr. Bush stood next to Olson on the tarmac at Ellington Field, calling the fellow Republican a "smart guy" who knows how to address issues such as terrorism and dependence on foreign oil.
Mr. Bush said the country needs to explore for more oil and gas here at home, and he said he wants Congress to lift a ban on offshore drilling to help increase domestic oil production.
Mr. Bush said people are worried about high gasoline prices.
Mr. Bush leaves Central Texas on Sunday.
