(April 5, 2006)—The U.S. military said Wednesday it can't confirm whether a poor-quality video posted on the Internet is authentic.
An extremist group in Iraq claims it shows Iraqi insurgents dragging the burning body of a U.S. pilot after the crash of a Multi-National Division – Baghdad AH-64D Apache Longbow helicopter west of Yousifiah.
The group, calling itself the Shura Council of Mujahadeen, claims it shot down the craft.
The U.S. military says the helicopter went down Saturday, possibly because of hostile fire.
It says it recovered "all available remains," and that it can't confirm whether the video is authentic.
The video footage is blurry, but the helicopter can be clearly seen.
It's not clear if the man being dragged is wearing a U.S. military uniform.
Both pilots from the helicopter are confirmed dead.
The military says it is "outraged that anyone would create and publish such a despicable video for public exposure."
