WACO (May 14, 2014) What started as a frantic trip early Wednesday morning to a local hospital ended in a traffic crash, and the death of an infant.

One-month old Jose Perez III died early Wednesday morning at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center to which he was taken by ambulance after the accident, which happened at around 6 a.m. at North 11th Street and Washington Avenue.

McLennan County Justice of the Peace Kristi DeCluitt ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of the infant’s death.

The infant’s parents called 911 early Wednesday as the left their home in the area of North 11th Street and Washington Avenue and headed south on 11th Street toward Interstate 35, Swanton said.

The dispatcher instructed them to return home to meet an ambulance and the driver turned around and was headed north on 11th Street when he ran a stoplight and his vehicle collided with the truck, which was westbound on Washington, Swanton said.

Swanton said the intersection was closed while a Waco police accident reconstruction team was at the scene investigating the crash.

Information about whether the infant’s parents or the driver of the other truck were injured wasn't immediately available.
