(April 7, 2006)—Firefighters are facing another busy day Friday as forecasters predict gusty winds and low humidity apart much of the state.

The biggest risk for wildfires should be in an area west of Dallas-Fort Worth to the Trans-Pecos and south to San Antonio, the Texas Forest Service said.

Gusty winds produced by a strong weather system Thursday fanned the flames of more than a dozen fires from the Panhandle south to Brewster County and as far east as Throckmorton County, the Forest Service said.

A thousand-acre fire Thursday in Gray County south of Pampa forced evacuation of Lefors and Bowers City.

Two fires were burning Thursday in north Amarillo, threatening more than a half-dozen structures.

The biggest fire to which the Forest Service responded Thursday was in Potter County north of Amarillo. It burned 20,000 acres.

“With the fire weather we’re expecting again (Friday), people just need to avoid any activity that could ignite a wildfire,” said Incident Commander Paul Hannemann.

“Be prepared to evacuate if a wildfire is threatening your community.”
