WACO (June 2, 2014) Police in both Waco and Lacy Lakeview on Monday were investigating early morning burglaries at area Family Dollar stores in which sledgehammers were used to break in to the businesses.

The Family Dollar Store at 1011 Crest Drive in Lacy Lakeview was broken into sometime around 1:50 a.m., Lacy Lakeview police Chief John Truehitt said.

When officers got to the scene they found the front glass doors smashed and evidence that burglars had been inside the store, although Truehitt could not say if anything was stolen.

Truehitt said investigators believe two men got into the store after using sledgehammers to smash the front glass.

Then just after 3 a.m. Waco police were sent to a Family Dollar Store in the 700 block of New Road after a break in was reported there.

Police are investigating the burglaries as likely connected.

"Until we are able to piece all the information together, and our detectives get with their detectives i don't know that they are the same people but certainly looked like it at this point," Swanton said.

The details of the second break-in were very similar to the first, Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said, except that store actually was burglarized twice.

Officers who went to the New Road break in reported two men used sledgehammers to smash in glass at the front of the store, then went inside looking for a safe.

After the two men left, and some 10 minutes later, another man who was walking by and noticed the broken glass went inside and helped himself to some merchandise, Swanton said.

Swanton said investigators do not believe the second man has any connection to the first two.
