Raise Retirement Age To Save Social Security? Save Email Print

A | A | A

(August 1, 2008)—One influential group says the way to keep Social Security from imploding is to make future recipients wait longer for their benefits.

The American Academy of Actuaries advises policymakers on risk and financial security issues.

The Academy wants any potential solution offered up by the White House and lawmakers to include raising the retirement age, noting that “future recipients will probably live longer anyway”.

Currently, the retirement age range is 65-to-67-years-old.

The Academy provided The Associated Press with an advance look of its recommendations Thursday; it plans to make the recommendations on Monday.

The next president and a new Congress will come under increasing pressure to act to fix the Social Security system.

The reason our government screws us is because they CAN. Someone earlier posted about French people protesting, why don't Americans protest? Because we are too fat and lazy to do anything but sit behind a computer and complain! The government knows that whatever they do people may not like it, but they won't do anything about it. We are just a bunch of sheep waiting to be told what to do.

To You & Me and Mary. Get off of the welfare and get a job!! That or go back to Mexico and leave MY country to the US citizens. BTW, apparently since both of you are posting as well. You BOTH are collecting welfare. Proven fact!

To Mary: Oh, mary, mary quite contray, don't trim our little conversation. Don't run off and start with Wisest. I can sit at home all day if I choose. I have already made mine. If you were productive person who could be your own boss, oh thats right, your to busy on the pc instead working more hours. At that rate you will never get there! Oh by the way, I don't hire illegals, so guess what, they don't make my living, ha ha. You said you don't sit on your ... at home, how the hell do you sit? Apparently, it has caused brain damage. Change ends, you might get a different outlook on life!

Posted by: Mary Location: Texas on Aug 7, 2008 at 04:46 PM
To Wisest, I am an US get it straight next of all don't mess with my family I support them with my work. Not just sitting my .... at home like most of yall. Do you work or do you sit at home while the illegals work for you.

Posted by: You & Me Location: Texas on Aug 7, 2008 at 04:41 PM
Wisest, Why don't you put your money where doesn't shine. For your info I work and I don't get any money under the table like you and your foodstamps.

Mary/You&Me: To bad you two don't read all the comments, if you did, you would have heard SS was mention before hand. Oh, by the way, I retired at a somewhat early age due to hard work and investments and that is not bad for a two time tour baby killer back from nam. I went and did all of this just so you anti-liberal war protesters and Fonda can feel like you help contributed to that war. after all this time, my one and only son with his two tours, was lucky enough to get the same reception from another generation of stupid liberals! Since I don't know for sure, I would say you are the same person. No welfare here, No unemployment checks here, No food stamps here, no government shelter here and no government handout of any kind here, just hard work with a little common sense. My new life is to shut down liberal ideology and stupid misinformed people like you two. Have a good day Rachel.

To Mary, Location Texas. Since you seem to be an expert on illegals please tell us how long you have been in the country illegally? And how much of the under the table wages that you earn do you send to your family in Mexico. You sure seem to defend the criminal invaders who are crossing the border for someone who isn't one of them...

Posted by: The Patriot Location: Texas on Aug 7, 2008 at 12:53 PM
Hey, You & Me, alot of people are talking about illegals on this post. Read some more comments. I guess you and Mary love leeching off the hard working taxpayer who has paid into SS all their working lives. But go ahead and support your illegals because soon there will be no SS money left for YOU!! Mary, why does the SS office have a big sign in Spanish saying you don't have to be a citizen to recieve SS benefits? Nice try, but you only made yourself sound stupid.

Posted by: You & Me Location: Texas on Aug 7, 2008 at 11:25 AM
Mac, Who in the world is talking about illegals here. Get a life

Posted by: Mary Location: Texas on Aug 7, 2008 at 09:17 AM
Mac who in the hell wants your ss. The illegals work for what they have and they are not in welfare like you and other stupid people like you. If the illegals didn't work in the US belive me you would not be eating lol..........

Posted by: Mac Location: TX on Aug 6, 2008 at 04:39 PM
Illegals can have my ss if they would go back to mexico and stay there!

Terminate the Congressional retirement plan, health plan and other perks and make them participate in Social Security, national healthcare, etc. and the problem will be fixed. Money coming out of their pockets to support illegal aliens, no way.

Rachel, Rachel, Rachel. Every time I think you cant sink any lower, you open your mouth and prove me wrong. If you think things are going to get better if a leftist (Obama) wins you are so sadly mistaken. Yes, the republicans held the minority for a few years and didnt accomplish much, but it wasnt till Pelosi and her left wingers took control that it really plumetted. Not only not getting anything done but sunk to new lows. About SS.....just give back the money paid in by working americans and come up with something else. Oh wait, they cant give back the money because how would they pay all the illegales they are going to give amnesty too?

Eliminate this Ponzi scam that was inflicted on the citizens of the US for government control of the elderly.

Dems or Rep, doesn't matter we just need some one in office that is for the American people and will stand up for us. The games these politicians are playing cost us,not them. And "Budget Surplus", wonder just how many of us really understands "Budget Surplus"? There is "NO" Budget Surplus, never has been.

Posted by: Holly Location: Belton,TX on Aug 5, 2008 at 02:28 PM
If one looks at the history of social security then we would find that it was meant to be a VOLUNTARY program. Meaning that those who chose to participate could and would recieve the benefits at retirement. Active participants would pay in and benefit at retiement. I wonder what zealous money-hungry politician decided that he would twist the rules and make the program mandatory for all, plus the working American ends up with nothing! I could of managed my own retirement much better than the government.

You people need to realize that Bush has not been in office 8 years, it has only been 6 and it takes a good 5 to 6 years to recouope from the previous nuckle head we had in office. As for as the new york times they have not printed the truth in over 60 years when they firs called world war II Mr Roosevelt's war. Now you how I feel about the idiots in the Democratic party whole have held the economy back by not going foward by working together with the republicans and Bush. Pelosi and Harry reed need to go!!!!

Posted by: anon Location: Waco on Aug 5, 2008 at 10:24 AM
the whole system is ridiculous. my father lost both legs in an accident and it took my mother over 8mths to get his ss started. an old boss of mine who is black claims she has anxiety and can't work and they gave her benefits in 4mths. what kind of sense does that make. I agree if the gov't would stop giving benefits to people that are too lazy to work and all these illegal aliens there would be enough to go around. the govt taxes me 600/mth just in taxes, medicare, and social security. you think i will ever see a dime of it hell no, because i'm single and i don't have any kids. the dumbest question in america today is why in the hell do I have to press 1 for English. Get a life, you are in America. You think if we went to Mexico and demanded them to speak English, they would do it. They would laugh. You are in America and when you become a legal citizen you are entitled to citizen benefits. But quit giving all of our hard earned money away to these thieves.

Posted by: Lynn Location: Coryell on Aug 4, 2008 at 04:42 PM
The Dems & Republicans both need to keep their hands out of the cookie jar. Also, quit giving SS to illegal aliens from MEXICO and CHINA, etc. Put everyone to work that can work. I have paid in since I was 17 years old. Vote McCain!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: LN Location: Robinson on Aug 4, 2008 at 03:33 PM
The SS system has been raided by both parties in this country for too long. Once the legislators figured out they could spend that money in other places it was irresistable to them. Next will be "big oil". Why do people keep complaining of "big oil profits"? Don't ya'll realize that almost 50% of that profit is collected in taxes by the federal government. Plus 18.4 cents/gallon for gas and 24 cents/gallon for diesel fuel sold at the pump. Do the math on just how much money the government is making on fuel. How many gallons of gas/diesel are sold per day?

To Rachel; You need to pay attention to what you are saying. The things you say proves you have no business teaching. Don't know what your problem is but, you definitely have a problem. You have proved your lack of knowledge and stupidity.

susiebw, you are sooooo right, 3 babies and mom don't have to work because she is not married and all 3 children have different fathers....you people think they don't know how to work the system....I was told this by a single illegal woman, who just had her 3rd kid...."government pay me to stay home and take care of kids".....they all know it, just like the generationally welfare system we have for the people to dang lazy to work...not because they can't, they don't want to work. And learned it from Mom, after mom, after mom.....WAKE UP PEOPLE, the only way to change it, is to stick together and make this government right....WE DO HAVE THAT RIGHT!!! It's OUR COUNTRY!!!!! Most people don't have the backbone to stand up and do anything....Oh and Congress needs to quit voting themselves raises! Especially if they can't run the system they need to be voted out.

Posted by: comments Location: waco on Aug 4, 2008 at 03:11 PM
I agree a lot with most of the people when I say also quit giving it away to the people that play the system and again like some one said you know who you are. It's like food stamps and everything else they know how to play and they get away with it while the ones who REALLY need it have to have blood proff they do. I am a single mother of two and have been working sice I was 16 and now at 40 at least I have my 401k to help out. Bless all

Posted by: Mother of Three Location: Temple on Aug 4, 2008 at 01:24 PM
I agree that the govt. needs to keep their hands out of our SS. But one way to increase the amount going in is to remove the cap on SS tax. Right now taxes are only taken out of the first $102,000 a person makes every year. The Medicare wage is unlimited. Why not make them both unlimited?? IF the govt. stays out of it. (Yeah right.) But if all of us "middle class" people have to pay on everything we make (because we don't make $102,000) then everyone should. You shouldn't get a break just because you make more. Privatizing SS doesn't seem so bad now.

Posted by: work until i die on Aug 4, 2008 at 01:11 PM
i have worked since i was old enough. i was hoping to enjoy a few years to do some things i want, cant afford to do much, but at lease enjoy something besides work. i do not think our government cares about us. they have their big retirement for them and their families, thats all that matters to them. if someone pulled theirs away from them, it might make a difference.

Posted by: Lois Location: Waco on Aug 4, 2008 at 12:58 PM
Just take off all those that haven't PAID into Social Security and that will be a big savings. Most of use started work at age 16-17 so our working until 67 means 50 years of putting money in with the possibility of never seeing a dime. NO ONE should receive SS without having paid in with the exception of a parents death and then payments to their children until age 18 (or out of school).

Posted by: EW Location: Texas on Aug 4, 2008 at 11:34 AM
Social Security is a joke. I am caring for my mother who's 62 because she cannot work. She has no certain medical condition. Just lots of years of hard work. My mother hasn't had much in her life. She has had to sell what she had of value. Now, a year later she has moved in with my family and I. We have tried everything to help her get on her feet, but it's just not gonna happen. She can't work to pay rent or utilities. Until a medical problem arises, what can we do. They need to change SS for people like my mother. It's just not fair!

Posted by: KDM Location: Waco on Aug 4, 2008 at 10:47 AM
Like all ponzi schemes SS is doomed to fail.

Posted by: Mac Location: TX on Aug 4, 2008 at 10:11 AM
Rachel, I hope your not a history teacher. Once again your wrong. Have you ever researhed political history? Watching liberal media and reading liberal ideology has brain washed you. You have hung yourself on ever debate and statement. Stop and look outside the box so you don't continue to be a jack in box.

Posted by: faye on Aug 4, 2008 at 07:31 AM
I have paid ss since I was 14 years old. Now I'm expected to work until I am 67. why don't they take some of the money they send overseas, some of the record profits the gas companies are making while we pay almost %4.00 a gallon for gas, the money our politicians spend on campaigns, and the retirement funds of congress, money wasted on an abundance of secret service and law enforcement every time the pres. comes to town, then there should be enough to pay monies paid by & promised us

Posted by: Anne Location: Greosbeck on Aug 4, 2008 at 07:26 AM
Just stop taking money from the SS Fund for other projects, it's for the retired who have paid in.

Posted by: John Location: Waco on Aug 4, 2008 at 05:41 AM
Well I guess they will have us all working until we reach 100 I just dont know what to thank about this one people ..

Posted by: Chris D Location: Chaulk Bluff on Aug 4, 2008 at 01:21 AM
The truth is Congress really doesn't care about fixing SS, because they do not use it. They have set themselves up a generous package outside of SS and will pay them and their spouses regardless of what happens to Social Security. For some reason they thought they deserved better benefits than us peasants. And for that reason alone you can see the lack of incentive to tackle the many woes of the SSA. If you want to see some real action, let something or someone get in the way of their separate retirement funds, and they'd have it sorted out in one session.

Posted by: Anon Location: centex on Aug 4, 2008 at 12:18 AM
Rachel, the large surplus was with Ford and I don't think he was a liberal. lol Then Carter started dipping into it for his other "programs". With all the programs Obama wants to put in place we will surely die broke.

Posted by: Bill Location: Woodway on Aug 3, 2008 at 09:32 PM
Social security was originally set up as a TRUST FUND for retirement. The Democrats and Republicans are to blame for fiscal condition Social Security is in today. Congress and the Executive branch should leave their hands out the cookie jar. Section 8 housing, food stamps, Homeland security, No Child Left Behind and war finance are failed programs should not have been paid for out of the Social Security TRUST FUND.

Posted by: observer on Aug 3, 2008 at 09:33 AM
Forcing people to work longer, also forces people to drive longer. We already have quite a few senior citicens that really should not be on the road anymore. But this would FORCE many older people to drive that might realize that they shouldn't be driving anymore. But heck that's ok by our government I guess. That would cause accidents and kill people. Hence, less people to pay Social Security to

Posted by: Rick Location: Harker Heights on Aug 3, 2008 at 08:25 AM
News Watcher, all one has to do is look at the requirements for membership to AAA. Yes, I'd say they lean (liberal). We had a surplus in the 70's. All that SS money did not go to retirees which it was intended for.

Posted by: Joe Location: WEaco on Aug 3, 2008 at 08:23 AM
Dems had 40 years to do something about SS but did not so get a life and quit blaming the past 8 years on republican when it has only been 6 plus with Bush with the previous 8 years being during the sorry Clinton years. I can't beleive smart people can't see thu the Dems or are they smart?

Posted by: Rachel Location: Temple on Aug 2, 2008 at 11:04 PM
Social Security has been an open box for every fiscal spending project America has wanted to do for 25 years. Al Gore had it right when he said to put a lock on the box and stay out of it, but instead the American people put George Bush in office and he managed to dip into it to fund the Iraq war (Check the New York Times, if you don't believe me) and he has managed to run the Social Security and everything else into the ground economically speaking in 8 years. Darn those democrats anyway - we had a budget surplus under those old liberals. My opinion - you voted for Bush you don't have a right to complain about Social Security - maybe we can put a "liberal" in next and start to recover the fund and Social Security will have a prayer without raising the age. News Watcher, it is nice to see that someone actually gets it!! I agree with you.

Posted by: News Watcher Location: Waco on Aug 2, 2008 at 02:46 PM
Bush and his cronies had 8 years to come up with a solution (six years of which the Republicans had a majority in Congress). No, they will wait until the Democrats take over and then they will complain. John in Temple is already ahead of the game and already blaming the DEMS.

Like I keep telling people when they ask me about retirement. Only when I die then I can retire. My dad is 81 and holding a full time job and a side job to make ends meat. If we came from a different country we could get help and not have to worry about death by taxes.

Posted by: Frank Location: Kempner on Aug 2, 2008 at 10:19 AM
I will agree with raising the age for receiving social security when Congress eliminates their plush retirement plan.

Posted by: Jeff Location: Lampasas on Aug 2, 2008 at 08:31 AM
Let's see now, Exxon is posting record profits by price gauging, there's Microsoft, General Motors, Ford and all of these other large companies making millions in profits. I say let them fix social security and then make big government keep there hands off of it! Only allow those who have paid in withdraw from it.

Posted by: Joe Location: Hamilton County on Aug 2, 2008 at 08:09 AM
Again, They are lucky that Americans are to lazy to protest in the streets. In France about 3 or 4 years ago their govt. was going to add a hour to their work week. Next day 3 million Frenchies in the street in Paris alone protesting. Next day after that French govt. cancels the new law. France is the size of Texas. U.S. couln't get 3 million people off their butts to protest in Washington DC for anything. It's different when the govt. is scared of the people, than when the people are scared of the govt.

Posted by: J in Kempner Location: Kempner on Aug 2, 2008 at 01:49 AM
If the government would get their grubby fingers off of "our" future social security, they would NOT have to force us to work longer! WE are and will always be the scapegoats for their failure to budget. It makes me SICK to think I am paying into it but will get NOTHING in return!

Posted by: anonymous Location: Austin on Aug 1, 2008 at 10:15 PM
The death benefit remains at $255 (whoo!!), don't break the bank. I tell you what infuriates me. The ones who freeload on the rest of us when they work the system and those who do it know who you are. I have worked since 18 yrs old and reading this article goes to show the government will try to keep your money no matter what and hope you die before you get it. This isn't fair. If there were more people working than freeloading, we wouldn't be where we are. There needs to be more oversight in the programs the state and federal government offers. Sometimes you wonder why you are working so hard just to help people lay on their (blank) and do nothing to deserve it. Please don't elect a democrat or you can see the future really good.

Why Raise the age requirement? So that the working do not collect. Quit handing it out to people who are able to work. I know of a kid recieving money from the dead stepfather's social security and his biological father is alive, doesn't work or pay child support. Collect child support for that kid and cut out the social security check out. I see people who look like they are able to work happlily cashing their SS checks. For 15 to 20 years a man works on cars/homes and gets paid under the table, never reporting the income, now has a disability and collects disabilty from his wifes' account. Why? Seems like the working man will never collect a dime and he/she will work themselves until death. While the non-working collect & spend it for them. The same things happen with Medicaid, Food Stamps & housing. The Middle man is always getting screwed.

Posted by: JD Location: Gbt on Aug 1, 2008 at 04:19 PM
And you people actually think that by the ago of 70 we are actually going to have enough energy in our old age to enjoy the money...or do you just want us to use it to pay for our 4 wall room at the nursing home? You money hungry people have a scary ending coming.

Posted by: susiebw Location: kempner on Aug 1, 2008 at 03:34 PM
We could save a bunch if the government would stop paying for all the little "baby machines", and the illegals! Why should the people who pay into the fund be punished because of all the illegals and unwed mothers? That's BULl!

Posted by: The Patriot Location: Texas on Aug 1, 2008 at 03:29 PM
A fix??? Yeah I see what their (fix) is....work everyone until they kill over, then they only have to pay a small one time death benefit. The retirement age has already been raised once. Enough!! The Academy of Actuaries can put their solution where the sun don't shine. This money BELONGS to the people who've paid into it all their working lives and would like to have some kind of retired life before heading straight to a nursing home!!

Posted by: taxpayer Location: central tx on Aug 1, 2008 at 12:34 PM
Has this influential group not looked at the obituaries lately? Maybe they need to start reading the deceased ages and then tell the nation "future" recipients will live longer. Their alternative word: "anyway".

Posted by: Citizen Location: Waco on Aug 1, 2008 at 12:26 PM
We need to stop giving away "free" things(programs) that people think they are entitled to today - just because they know how to work the system. The TRULY needy should be helped only. The money saved could go to retirement funds for the people who have worked day after day, year after year.

Posted by: Jeff Location: Lampasas on Aug 1, 2008 at 12:25 PM
I'll give them a hint on to fix it. Stop using it for everything else. Bunch of stupid political morons. I've paid hundreds of thousands into it and probably won't see a dime of it.

Has anyone ever thought that one way to keep Social Security from imploding is to not distribute it to people that didn't contribute to it.

Posted by: Annon Location: Waco on Aug 1, 2008 at 11:44 AM
It would not be too good on the elderly to raise the retirement age to 70 years. I dont agree with this method although, what else can you do?

Posted by: Jim Location: Albuquerque on Aug 1, 2008 at 11:38 AM
How old do the people that work for American companies in Mexico(such as Motorola) have to be before they draw S. S. ? And what about American companies in India and other places around the world ?

Posted by: David Location: Near By.... on Aug 1, 2008 at 11:29 AM
The only reason for raising the age is to hopefully prevent one from collecting their very own money. There are very few people that ever come close to receiving the amount in return that they have paid in to Social Security through their working years. If one lives to age 75, they will have collected for only ten years. The Government is mandating participation in a program to where they take our money, and then are unable to manage it. Therefore, another jab is made at the very people who have paid in their mandated amount, worked hard, and would like to enjoy the retirement years before they die. I say Give everyone who has paid in their money back, abolish the program, and stop paying our money to people who have not paid their fair share. Without proper checks and ballances any program will surely fail.

"future recipients will probably live longer"? Does this mean a National HealthCare Plan is going to be in effect for the next 50 years? A plan that guarantees surgery and medications to help Americans "live longer"? Someone should start purchasing shovels in BULK for our politicians and their rich friends!
