Mexican Man Set To Die For Rape Slayings Save Email Print

A | A | A

(August 5, 2008)—Condemned prisoner Jose Medellin is hoping the Supreme Court will stop his impending execution Tuesday evening.

He faces lethal injection for his part in the 1993 gang rape and murder of two Houston teenagers, Elizabeth Pena and Jennifer Ertman.

International attention focused on the Mexican-born Medellin's case after he says he wasn't allowed to consult the Mexican consulate for legal help following his arrest. At issue is whether a 1963 treaty was violated when he and about 50 others on death rows around the country were arrested.

President Bush has asked states to review those cases, but the Supreme Court says neither he nor an international court, which is raising questions, can force Texas to postpone Medellin's execution. It scheduled to happen at 6pm CDT.

I wonder if he consulted his consulate before raping and murdering those girls??????

Posted by: susiebw Location: kempner on Aug 11, 2008 at 03:29 PM
Ramona, why should they give him life? He didn't allow the two girls to have life?

THEY LITERALLY MUTILATED/TORTURED/SLICED/DISCOMBOBLED THEIR BODIES. THESE WERE MY FRIENDS FROM SCHOOL. I DONT CARE WHAT RACE YOU ARE IF YOU HURT SOMEONE OR KILL SOMEONE THE SAME THING NEEDS TO BE DONE TO YOU IF IT IS INTENTIONAL. I DONT CARE IF HE'S SORRY OR NOT IF HE'S NOT DEAD YET I HOPE HE HAS HORRIBLE NIGHTMARES FROM THAT DAY. THESE GIRLS WERE MY FRIENDS & THE WERE REAL HUMAN BEINGS. THESE GUYS KILLED THEM. THEY WERE SOMEONES DAUGHTERS, SISTERS, AUNTS, COUSINS, FRIENDS, ETC WHAT IF IT WAS YOUR FAMILY INVOLVED YOU WOULD WANT JUSTICE------------THANKS

Hey Lou, wake up. Just because we treat prisoners one way, do you honestly feel other governments will treat americans the same. Seriously, Having been to most contries in Central and South America as well as most of europe, I can tell you one thing. They do NOT follow our rules. Never have and never will. In europe it may happen, depending on what you are accused of but in Mexico and parts south? Forget it. If we brought all our troops home and sat around singing Kumbaya I garantee that the hatred other nations feel for us will only turn to disdain and they will still hate us.

Posted by: krishonda Location: killeen on Aug 7, 2008 at 11:54 AM
I read this story and it is just one of many that makes me really mad,I don't care what race he is, what he did was devilish and he needs to pay for what he did in the worst way and if that means putting his crazy a** to death then let it be,he deserve to die,he should of died the day he was convicted, why has it took so long,I AM A MOTHER OF THREE AND IF HE WOULD HAVE DONE THIS TO ONE OF MY DAUGHTERS I would have put him to death myself!!!!!!!!

Posted by: kay Location: temple on Aug 7, 2008 at 08:53 AM
To Lou from Waco, he has lived here since he was 3, he wasn't just visiting obviously. Those girls were tortured I repeat tortured. He got what he deserved without the torture. He should have been stoned with the rest of his gang

Posted by: Just sayin is all Location: Ft Hood on Aug 7, 2008 at 07:56 AM
Hey JuJu, Amen. My mother was an immigrant to this country so I am obviously all for immigration. and welcome to all who come for a better life, work and raise a family. To those that rape and murder, welcome to Texas, we have the death penalty and aint afraid to use it!

Posted by: RAMONA GOMEZ on Aug 6, 2008 at 12:47 AM
I they should give him life. And if he is born in mexico why shouldmt he get the help from the mexican government. Just like those two police officers who got arrested in mexico for trying to cross guns in their country. I bet the government here is trying to do everything he can to make bail for them. I hope they do get bail because, jail is way diffrent than here. THEY WILL GET BEAT. Feel sorry for them.

My opinion is this NO more than 3 days max after found guilty and sentenced to death... Todays resources and high tech crime labs, there should'nt be 1 to 20 yrs waiting to be put to death, 3 days MAX.. I'm tired of houseing and feeding these people who do such horrible crimes, heck fire bring back the gallos on the court house lawns and invite the people out and watch the hangings like in the old days.....

Posted by: Lou Location: Waco on Aug 5, 2008 at 07:14 PM
I don't agree with the decision for the parole board to go ahead and execute Medellin. It is NOT practical because, it is not a matter of defending the inmate for the crime he committed. It is a matter of fulfilling international protocol. It means that if Texas corrections go through discarding consular advice, then Americans who travel to other countries will NOT have consular protection and WILL be at the same system of justice as a local. In other words if Americans find themselves in jail in other countries, they will NOT receive protection under American legal advice. You will serve for your crime at the mercy of another country's legal system. That what it means. Other countries will do the same to us as we are doing it to them.

I am sick of hearing criminals period pout about having to die when they never thought about how the person or persons felt as they were being killed. "I never got to talk to the Mexican Consulate", "I'm too fat and the drugs won't work and my death will be too painful", "I am a diabetic and the drugs I take will make it harder for the lethal injection to work and it will be painful", "the migrain medication I take will keep the first lethal dose from working and i will feel everything". STOP THE BS, YOU did the crime, you killed someone and now it is your turn to die. It is time to stop giving them chance after chance to get out of death, this type of sewer needs flushed once and for all.

In response to William, it actually costs more to exacute them then to provide food and shelter for a lifetime sentence. However I am completely for this disgusting waste of air to be put to death!

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 5, 2008 at 01:58 PM
One victim had a belt wrapped around her neck so tight the belt broke. The other victim had a shoe string tied around her throat to choke her and when that didn't do it they stomped on the girls throats. No matter where you are, you have to respect/obey the laws of the country you are in. No matter if it's visiting or living (legally/illegally). This is absolutely disgusting! I'd like to know how the animals can justify in their minds their heinous actions and then when they are set to die, suddenly they are scared.

Why is this trash still here? Gut em and send him back.

Posted by: me Location: out here on Aug 5, 2008 at 12:04 PM
i went to school with elizabeth in houston at that time & they mutilated these girls. he needs to suffer & all the rest of them too for hurting & torturing their bodies.

Posted by: susiebw Location: Kempner on Aug 5, 2008 at 11:43 AM
He's lived alot longer than he allowed those little girls to live. The quicker the better, and if Mexico tries to stop it, declare war again!

Posted by: sarah Location: temple on Aug 5, 2008 at 11:36 AM
legal or not legal - if you take someone elses life then yours should be taken as well.

So President Bush is on the side of the killer??!! Not surprising.

Posted by: Mr. potassium chloride Location: tex on Aug 5, 2008 at 11:18 AM
This pos thug has been on death row longer than one of his victims was alive! This is long over due! Sounds like its time for an execution party! Get a few friends together, order some pizza, drink a beer or two, celebrate justice, and light a candle in memory of the victims! My thoughts go out to the families of these beautiful young girls! Never forget the victims never!!

you can thank your good ole lair,I mean Lawyer for that, they are the one who have this country all crapped out, because they are in it to make money any way they can,and if you need them to lie for you in court then they will, for the right price

Posted by: The Patriot Location: Texas on Aug 5, 2008 at 10:46 AM
Sometimes the Supreme Court surprises me. They are absolutely right in saying Bush nor an international court can "force" Texas to postpone this execution....it's been (postponed) too long. Take note Mexico!

Posted by: rick Location: waco on Aug 5, 2008 at 09:48 AM
im sick of hearing illegals cry about rights they deserve in this country that they dont even get in their own country they want to be here but as soon as they do something wrong they want to make a huge deal about it why do you want help from a country you left

Posted by: gerry Location: cameron on Aug 5, 2008 at 09:44 AM
execute the worthless trash and dump his remains somewhere on mexican soil. just as he did these two poor victims. pitiful.

Posted by: st Location: centraltexas on Aug 5, 2008 at 09:39 AM
They should have killed [him] a long time ago, [he] should have never been on the street when these murders happened. I read the book on this case and this guy was running around robbing people, stealing cars, and shooting people but was never charged with the shootings or robberies, just stealing cars and put out on probation. Harris County failed their citizens big time in this case!!!!

Posted by: Mac Location: TX on Aug 5, 2008 at 09:37 AM
Long over due!

Posted by: SAINT JUJU on Aug 5, 2008 at 09:34 AM
I AM A LEGAL RESIDANT FROM NUEVO LEON MEXICO AND BELIVE THAT IF YOU ARE HERE IN THIS COUNTRY LEGAL OR NOT YOU NEED TO OBEY THE RULES OF THIS LAND AND IF YOU DONT YOU NEED TO BE PREPAIRD TO SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES AND PUNISHMENT HERE IF YOU DONT AGREE GO BACK TO MEXICO ITS PEOPLE LIKE THIS SCUM THAT GIVE A BAD NAME TO THE REST OF HERE WHO ARE REALY TRYING TO MAKE A BETTER LIFE FOR OURSELVES AND FAMILIES I DONT AGREE WITH THE DEATH PENALTY BUT IT IS THE LAW!! SO R.I.P BUDDY SHOULD OF THOUGHT TWICE BEFORE YOU COMMITED SUCH AN UGLY CRIME!

Posted by: William Location: Salado on Aug 5, 2008 at 09:10 AM
I agree with TEXASLEGAL, we are taking way too long to give these criminals their due justice. When you are found guilty, a court should review the case and then make the determination if a retrial is needed for appeals, if there is no reason for an appeal then they should be executed immediately. We pay too much money for these criminals to remain alive asking for useless stays to their executions, the money that we spend to keep these animals alive could go to good to better uses in the community.

Posted by: Lori Location: Waco on Aug 5, 2008 at 08:51 AM
If you do the crime you should do the time. If that means death, then so be it. People on death row have it way too easy. They have a roof over their head, don't have to work and eat better than than most people out in the real world. All this at our expense. Enough is enough.

Posted by: Chris D Location: Chaulk Bluff on Aug 5, 2008 at 08:32 AM
I read yesterday's account in the paper of what these guys were convicted of and I don't care where they are from, they deserve the death penalty. Just because they were illegals doesn't mean they are not subject to the laws of our state/country while they are here raping and torturing. They gave all that up when they decided to kidnap, torture, and rape those girls before dumping them like garbage. I personally can't wait for his execution, in hopes that it will send a clear message to anyone else "visiting" our country. And with the millions of illegal aliens roaming our state and nation, the last thing we need to do is send a message that they are not subject to our laws while they are here. That would be disasterous. Besides, it's not like we let our citizens get away with behavior like that, either. Medellin is far from being singled out.

So what's the hold up? 14 years is to long. He should have gotten the needle the day he was sentenced.
