(August 8, 2008)—Travelers planning to fly out of DFW International Airport may encounter added fees to their ticket costs.
Airports make money when flights land, but one of DFW’s biggest customers is American Airlines. The Fort Worth based company will begin cutting 42 flights per day after Labor Day.
To combat the loss of flights, the airport may elect to raise the fees it charges all airlines to land for six months and, in turn, the airlines could hike their ticket prices to cover the cost.
DFW could tap into natural gas revenues if the City of Fort Worth begins to allow drilling. The airport could also close unused portions of terminals to cut back on costs.
To go along with increased fees to fly into DFW, American has announced it will take more miles to get a free flight.
This comes as the airline is trying to cope with rising fuel costs.
Beginning in October, American will charge $50 and fifteen thousand miles to upgrade from coach to business class on domestic flights; international flight upgrades will also cost extra.
All of these increases are in addition to the recent increases in fees for checked baggage, booking fees as well as fees for unaccompanied minors and traveling pets.
