(August 12, 2008)—Police were dispatched to a Gonzales School Board meeting after tempers flared over a new student dress code that requires some students to wear prison-like jumpsuits.

Nobody was arrested after the outburst at the meeting Monday night.

Gonzales superintendent Vic Salazar says there was a public comment period, and then some members of the audience started yelling at trustees about the dress code.

Two Gonzales police officers arrived to keep order.

The district's new dress code bans cargo pants and requires students to wear collared shirts.

Those in grades 5-12 who don't obey may also be put in blue coveralls the district ordered from the industrial arm of Texas prison system.

The coveralls are an option so students can comply with the dress code and remain in class.

Parents may still take students a change of clothes, or children can serve in-school suspension.

Rachel & Jeff, Yall to get real. The issue here is a dress code. This will help the learning enviroment for all students. Schools are a place of learning. NOT A FASHION SHOW OR BABY SITTING SERVICE. It seems now a days alot of parents are forgeting this. They dont care as long as the kids are not in their hair.

While a school dress is certainly appropriate, I think that this school board is not interested in dress for the environment. Sounds like to me they have a point to prove. If the dress code is for collared shirts and appropriate pants then they should have purchased collared shirts and appropriate pants for the students to use. It sounds like to me that they are into student humiliation. How many 5th, 6th grade students really have control over what mom or dad buy or don't buy for school. I don't see anything inappropriate about cargo pants as long as they are worn around the waist and not allowed to drag the floor or show one's anatomy. I think that this school board needs to find something to better occupy its time. The parents need to set an example of addressing conflict constructively instead of arguing and shouting and all of them need to grow up and move on!!

I say have the students start up a petition for a lack of confidence of the school board and hold a special election to have board members removed and install new board members. That way not only the students learn how a democratic society works but, the parents as well, instead of acting like idiots. Just an ideal. May the best one win!

In response to the first comment made by MelP. You are right on the money!! The parents need to grow up and stop letting their kids dress like thugs. Make sure your kids comply and the jumpsuit isn't an issue. The worse thing that could happen is that they look presentable and maybe it'll stick with them when they are adults.

Yeah right. The police were called because Salazar, the proponent of "conservative values," was asked how he could sit in judgment when he has a mistress. There are 26 rules, many of the gender-specific. The rules are written broad enough to ensure that certain people will be excused and others will be deemed "distracting." Gonzales, TX has serious problems with race. The entire town is segregated and the week this story broke, the newspaper ran a guest editorial advocating White Pride stating that "African Americans have more rights than you" and "How much more pandering to blacks and minority's have we to do before we lose completely all pride in our White ethnic Identity?" This is not just the rant of a lone crazyman. This is an opinion that is predominant in the town and in the school. The school board is trying to distract from real problems in the school and is implementing an extremely strict dress code that will only be enforced for certain groups.

Just abide by the dress code and it shouldn't be an issue. Clothes should fit properly and not be a distraction-period.

come on parents grow up. stop sweating the small stuff, pick and choose your battles carefully, it doesn't hurt kids to wear a uniform, get real

You have got to be kidding me! These parents and kids need to stand up to these deranged dirtbags and say "over my dead body"! There was no violence, but there should have been. Those twisted little Nazis should have been tarred and feathered for even thinking of such a thing. Good god where has my country gone?

its a shame that even adults cant stop fighting over cloths. Maybe the same should go for the teachers. After all they dont exactly go by dress code either, and maybe a more sufficient background check.

hmmmm...have my child follow a dress code or have them wear a jumpsuit. I think I would just make sure they follow the dress code so the jumpsuit wouldn't even be an issue. Stop mollycoddling your kids so we can have some productive citizens in a few years.
