KILLEEN (July 30, 2014) A Killeen man is on trial in Austin charged with the March 2013 shooting death of a Pflugerville man in downtown Austin.
Derrick Leroy Kuykendall, 23, could spend the rest of his life in prison of a jury finds him guilty in the death of Bennie Heslip, 23, of Pflugerville.
Austin police say Heslip was shot during a disagreement between two groups of people who had been on Sixth Street during the 2013 Texas Relays weekend.
Testimony has shown Heslip and Kuykendall did not know each other.
The shooting, which was the first murder recorded in Austin in 2013, happened in a parking lot on East 11th and Trinity streets in downtown Austin.
An argument erupted between the two groups and during the disagreement two shots were fired, police said at the time.
Kuykendall fled the scene with his friends and Heslip was left lying on the parking lot.
Testimony was set to continue in the trial on Wednesday morning.
