(April 27, 2006)—Texas House Democrats called for a 90-day "gas tax holiday" to help drivers struggling with skyrocketing prices at the pump.

The state taxes gasoline and diesel at 20 cents per gallon, collecting about $2.9 billion last year.

The gas tax holiday would cost the state about $700 million, said Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer, D-San Antonio, but the budget hole could be covered with increased federal funding from the transportation bill passed last year.

The federal bill is calculated to bring Texas an extra $788 million annually, he said.

"If you ask the average Texan, they're fed up with the gas tax, fed up with the price of gas," Martinez Fisher said.

"The gas tax is one of the most regressive taxes we have. No matter how much money you make, we all have to drive. We need to provide Texans with tax relief at the gas pump," said House Democratic Leader Rep. Jim Dunnam, D-Waco.

"We are calling on Governor Perry to add the 'Gas Tax Holiday' to the agenda for this special session."
