(August 19, 2008)—McLennan Community College President Dr. Dennis Michaelis announced Tuesday afternoon he will retire effective Aug. 31, 2009 after more than two decades at the helm of the school, which has had only two presidents in its 43-year history.
Michaelis said he advised school trustees four years ago that he planned to retire.
Board of Trustees Chairman Randy Cox said the board will meet Tuesday night to name a search committee and said the board hopes to name a successor by the end of the year.
Michaelis succeeded MCC’s first president, Wilbur Ball, on Sept. 1, 1988.
He’s a Kansas native who graduated from the University of Kansas in 1965, earned a master of arts degree in English from Fort Hays State University in Kansas in 1970 and a doctorate in higher education from Kansas State University in 1979.
He served as president of Paris Junior College from 1983 to 1988.
During his tenure, MCC experienced significant growth in both enrollment and facilities.
In 2006, voters approved a $74.5 million bond issue to fund construction of a new science building, a general classroom building and an emergency services center.
Projections show that even at a modest growth rate, MCC’s enrollment will reach 12,500 by 2015.
