Texas College Student Who Disappeared Won’t Face Charges Save Email Print

(August 20, 2008)--Prosecutors in northern California say they have decided not to seek criminal charges against a Rice University student found unharmed after disappearing nine months ago.

University of California-Berkeley campus police arrested Matthew Wilson after finding him in a classroom after school hours with a laptop they believed was stolen.

Wilson was taken into custody but was transferred to a San Francisco Bay-area mental hospital and placed on a suicide watch.

Alameda County, Calif. prosecutors say the only evidence that could have been used to charge Wilson were a pair of scissors he had with him that evidently were university property.

Officials were unable to determine that the laptop was stolen.

Wilson was enrolled at Rice University in Houston but was last seen Dec. 15 by his roommate before he was to have taken his finals.

Rice and his family offered a combined $20,000 reward for information on his whereabouts.

Crime Stoppers of Houston pitched in another $5,000 for information that would have led to felony charges.

not judging but he had books on how to change his identity. that is crazy to me. love who you are & deal with the problems that you are faced with everyday. if his family caused this they still love him & were worried. i mean 9 months???????????

Going to Berkeley, should be self explanatory.

I feel like disappearing everyday

They meant that the only way to get that reward is if there had been a felony committed. And Amy, how do you know that the family didn't cause the meltdown and he was trying to escape? Don't judge until you know the facts and they definitely haven't been published.

I am thankful this young man is safe. Sometimes things can happen that drive a person to make seemingly irrational decisions. I know his family must have been so relieved to know he is safe. I just pray that the root issue that caused him to want to leave and run away is healed, and that he doesn't ever feel like he has to dissappear from everyone again.

The guy was obviously just getting away from something. I don't see the harm in taking off and not telling anybody. He could have just been taking a break from reality and also, he wasn't doing any harm. Give the guy a break.

I'm confused...what felony? Is it a felony to steal a laptop? Is it a felony to steal scissors? Is is a felony to go on a 9 month hiatus?

he needs a psych evaluation!!!!!!!how could you be trying to hide or change your identity???? i hope his family is okay after he put them through all that worrying

This guy must obviously have some serious issues to disappear for nine months and leave his family to worry about him
