(August 20, 2008)--Lions Park Trail in Temple has joined an elite list by being named to the National Trail System.
Rep. John Carter, R-Round Rock, made the announcement Wednesday afternoon at Lions Park.
The trail is one of only seven in the entire state to receive such a designation.
There was "a lot of competition. So to be designated as a recreational trail is a big deal. They should be very proud of that,” Carter said.
The trail is two-miles long and was built with grant funding from Texas Parks and Wildlife, along with the city's matching funds.
As part of the national system, the trail is expected to draw visitors in from across the country.
“I think it says a lot for the city,” Temple Parks & Leisure Director Ken Cicora said.
“The citizens have said for a long time that hike and bike trails are important to them. They want them built. They want them nice and I think this designation just caps that off and it's really terrific."
The designation comes from the U.S. Department of Interior as part of the 1968 National Trail System's Act.
