(August 21, 2008)--Two men were in area hospitals Thursday after the crash of a small plane on a Central Texas baseball diamond.
Authorities say the single-engine Cessna was flying from Sugar Land to Waco when 39-year-old pilot Cole Reed of Georgetown reported engine problems.
He tried to make an emergency landing at the Caldwell airport, but the plane struck a light pole at the nearby baseball field and crash landed on the infield about 6 p.m. Wednesday.
"Reports are that they were apparently having engine problems and that they had- this is all second hand- but that they had spotted the runway and were trying to get around to it but just didn't make it," said Caldwell Police Chief Paul Lilly told KBTX-TV.
There were no injuries on the ground, where players and coaches were in the outfield.
Reed was in critical condition Thursday at Scott and White Hospital in Temple.
His 24-year-old passenger, Bryan Farney of Taylor, was in serious condition at St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan.
