Two Men Seriously Hurt In Crash Of Waco-Bound Plane Save Email Print

(August 21, 2008)--Two men were in area hospitals Thursday after the crash of a small plane on a Central Texas baseball diamond.

Authorities say the single-engine Cessna was flying from Sugar Land to Waco when 39-year-old pilot Cole Reed of Georgetown reported engine problems.

He tried to make an emergency landing at the Caldwell airport, but the plane struck a light pole at the nearby baseball field and crash landed on the infield about 6 p.m. Wednesday.

"Reports are that they were apparently having engine problems and that they had- this is all second hand- but that they had spotted the runway and were trying to get around to it but just didn't make it," said Caldwell Police Chief Paul Lilly told KBTX-TV.

There were no injuries on the ground, where players and coaches were in the outfield.

Reed was in critical condition Thursday at Scott and White Hospital in Temple.

His 24-year-old passenger, Bryan Farney of Taylor, was in serious condition at St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan.

What an idiotic statement that these planes are unsafe! Learn your statistics and realize operating a motor vehicle from day to day is 10,000 times more life threatining than general aviation. Cessna has a tremendously safe record over all; forms of transportation! Forget the fact that the training to recieve a pilot certificate takes an immense amount of concentration and is extremely demanding. Safety is of the upmost concern for all involved! Texas commercial Helicopter Pilot/ Airplane certificate too.

My grandmother lives close to the Baseball field and she called us at the house saying she heard a loud crash at the Baseball field. And there were kids warming up for a game I believe. Thank God those Kids weren't hurt. My thoughts and prayers go out to the pilot and his passenger and their families.

There sure have been numerous plane crashes lately. Thank goodness no one was killed. May God be with these families during this time.

"Has anyone else not realized that these Cessna's are dangerous" Carrie when an airplane crashes it makes the news. So you here much more about them then say car crashes. Statements like the one that you made are just not backed up in fact. As a pilot, I just had to set you straight. So much misinformation gets put out. Thanks
