On Aug. 23, 1927, 81 years ago today, Mary Nees Able was born in Bremond. After marrying and giving birth to two children of her own, she began flying as an activity to share with her husband. She went on to become the chief flight instructor and senior pilot at a Texas flight school and later founded her own flight school. She served as an FAA examiner, founded an aviation company, and was the fifth woman in the world to be rated to fly a Lear jet. She died in 1988.

On August 23rd, 1927, Italian-born anarchists Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were executed in Boston for the murders of two men during a 1920 robbery. (Fifty years later, on this date in 1977, Massachusetts Governor Michael S. Dukakis proclaimed that "any stigma and disgrace should be forever removed" from their names.)
