(August 25, 2008)—A judge Monday in Navarro County awarded custody of more than 100 birds seized in the bust of a chicken-fighting ring to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Texas.
The birds were rescued from a rooster fight earlier this month near Corsicana, which was in progress when authorities arrived.
Authorities found about 90 people at the fight, 65 of them adults and 25 of them juveniles.
Most were issued citations and two were arrested.
The seizure followed the March rescue of more than 300 fighting chickens in Navarro County.
SPCA officials say such birds are not safe as pets because many are in continuous attack mode and were trained to fight to the death.
Deputies seized 154 fighting birds in the raid on Aug. 16, but 11 were dead by the time representatives of the SPCA arrived to help round up and transport them.
The birds were kept at an undisclosed location under armed guard until Monday’s hearing, the SPCA said.
