Investigators Look For Cause Of Massive Pawnshop Fire Save Email Print
Reporter: By Matt Felder

(August 27, 2008)--Fire investigators are now working to piece together what sparked a massive fire that destroyed Action Pawn

The fire broke out just before 9:30 p.m. Tuesday at the business at the intersection of South Fort Hood Street and Central Texas Expressway.

The fire became a ragging inferno in a matter of minutes, most likely because of the number of electronics, tools and weapons inside the store.

"I probably arrived on scene within a minute and a half or two minutes of the initial call,” Killeen Fire Chief Jerry Gardner said.

“There were flames through the roof at that time and the rear of the building."

Firefighters from Killeen, Fort Hood and Harker Heights responded, totaling seven engine companies.

The building along with its valuables is considered a total loss.

The instability of the building itself, didn't allow investigators to begin sifting through the rubble until Wednesday afternoon.

While investigators searched for answers about how the fire started, the other task at hand was accounting for close to 1000 firearms and 50,000 rounds of ammunition believed to have been inside the business.

Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms worked to account for every weapon, while customers with merchandise at the pawnshop were left to wonder what happens next.

Sheena Rae-Skitromo searched for answers about a laptop computer she used to get a loan.

"I was suppose to pick it up tomorrow and there's over $2,000 worth of merchandise in there that belongs to me," Rae-Skitromo said.

The pawnshop says customers need to hold onto their pawn tickets, but say it may take a few days to sort everything out.

Wow... I have read some of these comments and to those that are understanding THANK YOU for those of you with all the negative remarks wow not everyone is needing a quick fix, some us are just smart enough to leave those high intrest loans alone if I only need a hundred dollars for something its smarter to go to Action Pawn than to get a payday loan so... now whos the idiot, what may work for you may not work for all, and befor you judge becare for one day it could be you. People lost there income for who knows how long and some lost belongings that they worked long and hard for and it only took a matter of minutes. SO IN CLOSING THANK TO THOSES WHO UNDERSTAND , and to those who don't I dont take it personnaly

to anonymous, hmmm, why are you not using a real name. People in glass house should not throw stones! I certainly hope you never fall on bad times, because then after "giving up your phone, satelite, eating out, and working extra jobs" you will rethink your immature comments, and you going 'unnamed' proves just how immature you are. To those of you that have pawned and lost items, I feel your pain and pray that all will be well.

I know people who get more than $100 a week for donating plasma/blood and it's a very appreciated donation for it saves lives. If your material possessions are that sentimental, why take the chance on pawning them? Sharon in Killeen: What is your point in your last comment ...that you have anger issues and like to threaten other posters?

Posted by: Are you kidding - MIKE Location: Ft Hood on Aug 29, 2008 at 10:11 AM
Sharon, If you have a gun and are very very very hot headed I guess the idiots are the ones who licenced you. If you are licenced that is. I simply questioned why anyone would think donating plasma was worse than pawning something. Lisa emphasizes my point by reminding me that there are even fewer people who CAN donate blood in this area because a lot of military personnel who selflessly donate, can not any longer because there is not an appropriate method to screen for Mad Cow disease at this time. By the way, when they ARE able to screen for it, you might wanna pop into a clinic and get tested, unless of course you have already pawned your gun by then.

Posted by: The Patriot Location: Texas on Aug 29, 2008 at 08:02 AM
I doubt Sharon in Killeen could "give" her blood away if she wanted to. Her ranting and raving all over these stories with her "holier than thou while gonna whoop your butt attitude" makes her sound like a crackhead maniac.

To Are You Kidding: Location: FT.HOOD---I didn't call you out of your name and nor do I appreciated you calling me an idiot. If you choose to gave your blood or plasma that is your choice but if I choose not to that is my business. I am glad you sign your name "Are you kidding" because not only am I an idiot as you say but I am also very very very hot-headed, ask KPD I have a case for toting a weapon.

Posted by: Lisa Location: Abilene on Aug 28, 2008 at 05:17 PM
And about the plasma thing...Not one person in our house can donate ANY blood products because we were overseas during the "mad cow" hysteria. Please pray that I don't eventually turn into an angry bovine! :)

Posted by: Lisa Location: Abilene on Aug 28, 2008 at 05:14 PM
I feel sorry for all involved. It is too hard for A LOT of people to make ends meet in todays world. For the ones that are out of work, I hope and pray that you all find jobs soon. For those that lost something in the fire, I hope that you find comfort in knowing that you were able to feed, clothe, shelter your family off of the items you pawned. I am doubly thankful that there were no people hurt or killed in this mess! We live within our means as best we can, but for some people, the "means" are getting mighty thin! I would hope that there would be more compassion for all involved and less harshness going around, after all...."There but for the grace of God go I".

Posted by: p Location: temple on Aug 28, 2008 at 04:20 PM
For all those that have lost something in the fire so sorry you are in our prayers. To everyone that is making the comments about how we spend our money.... sorry but I do not receive foodstamps, medicade, or any other assitance, from anyone so when it comes to something to pawn to make it to the next payday then that is what we have to do.

Posted by: Mother of Three Location: Temple on Aug 28, 2008 at 04:05 PM
To Action Pawn Employee in San Antonio: I WORK from home and have NEVER had to depend on the government to feed my children. I chose to stay home because it was what was BEST for my children. I'm not whining, all the people who lost "sentimental" items are. I was simply saying you take that chance when you pawn your valuables for a little cash. Tell the people complaining about their stuff being lost to stop whining because I don't care what you say or think. I DO feel sorry for them and hope they get reimbursed for their lost items but don't pawn precious stuff in the future.

Posted by: Dont Miss It Location: Whitney on Aug 28, 2008 at 03:57 PM
I used to live on Fort Hood Street and everytime I used to go into that store there was always more junk piled up. The owner was a money hungry man who was to high priced and Im sure he had wonderful insurance!!!! Can we say ARSON? I dunno let the fire marshall decide! Just and idea!!

Posted by: Michelle Location: Central TX on Aug 28, 2008 at 03:53 PM
I've used a pawn shop before...stressing over money..however, not this one. The owner/manager is rude, condesending and obnoxious. Those poor employees. My heart goes out to all involved. As said before, maybe the owner will rethink his business practices before he re-opens. The items are overpriced, might as well buy new, then who would need his business?

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 28, 2008 at 02:45 PM
For those of you that have "high paying" jobs, but have to resort to pawning stuff to get buy, here is what I would do. Before I would pawn anything, especially family heirlooms and sentimental items, I would 1. get rid of my cell phone, this would save me $120 per month, 2. get rid of my satelite/cable, this would save another $100 per month. 3. stop eating out(we eat out often, so this would save bunches of money) and take advantage of more sales and use more coupons. 4. my husband and I both would get 2nd jobs. But, if you don't work anyway, you would need to get a 1st job 1st. I am not certain, but I thought you get such little amounts for this stuff, in the whole scheme of things, what difference does $10-$15 really make when you risk losing something so valuable to you?

Posted by: sorry Location: killeen on Aug 28, 2008 at 02:27 PM
to Sharon on Aug. 28th, I am sorry that you had to encounter his bad attitude, too. I really was trying to give him the benefit of the doubt. Some people just keep on and don't learn lessons from the bad things that happen in life...hopefully he will learn something and try to be nicer to his customers & employees once he gets the business back up and running again. It's really sad that he treats his employees badly, also. They don't deserve it, and good grief, you would think that the boss would try to keep the employees happy. That makes better employees, then that makes a better business. it's just a sad situation all the way around. I hope the single mom you were talking about finds another good job really soon so she can get on with her life. I wish her lots of luck.

Posted by: Are you Kidding me? Location: Ft Hood on Aug 28, 2008 at 12:07 PM
Sharon, I think I might kinda know where you are coming from, but I dont understand one thing. One kinda of idiot thinks donating Plasma is worse than pawning? Do you not know where the plasma goes and what it is used for? Do you think they make Meth out of it? It is used to save lives all over the state and country. And it is in increasingly short supply. I worry that there are too many people like you and one say we may be in an operating room and be in trouble because there was no blood or plasma...Idiot

Posted by: Just sayin is all Location: Ft Hood on Aug 28, 2008 at 12:01 PM
TO KDM. I have Flock of Seagulls and Starland Vocal Band along with a hundred or so other albums from the 70's and 80's, yes, real vinyl. But if you had to pawn yours, you couldnt afford mine..lol (Sorry, couldnt help it). Hey, this is Killeen, its been awhile since a business has burned down, we were over due. I wonder if the owner also used to own some clubs and restaurants in this area. I do feel bad for alot of the people who was effected by this. But I have gone into that place on several occasions looking for stuff, was treated poorly, well mostly ignored and found the prices rediculous. I mean, I understand how a pawn shop operates but the prices they had were about the same as sears in a lot of cases.

Posted by: How Rude Location: Killeen on Aug 28, 2008 at 10:23 AM
First of all, Im sick of everyone posting rude comments. Get off your high horses, you put your pants on one leg at a time just like everyone else. As a person who HAS pawned stuff at Action Pawn, I have experience in this deptartment. My husband and I couldn't make ends meet. We were both working high paying jobs, but were not making enough to support our family. We do not spend money on foolish things, only necessities. We had to "loan" some expensive items just to get by. Before you go judging people you should walk a day in their shoes. Would you do anything you could to buy the NECESSITIES for your family? Regardless of your answer, we should have compassion for others. This world is already harsh enough and by the way who are you to judge others?

Posted by: Action Pawn Employee In San Antonio Texas Location: San Antonio on Aug 28, 2008 at 09:57 AM
It is a true shame what happened to Action... I feel for all of you.. As the coment by the mother of 3.... STOP WHINNING!!! Maybe you had foodstamps back in the day but I am tired of paying to feed your children...and or stop being a stay home mom and start being independent without your husband having to ALWAYS support you.. With that many kids you probably are on foodstamps, no doubt about that.

Posted by: Mother of Three Location: Temple on Aug 28, 2008 at 09:30 AM
If you were THAT hard up for money then why didn't you get food stamps?? Or a better job to support your children?? My mother worked THREE jobs when I was little to support us, one of which she worked just to pay for health insurance. You do what you have to do for your children but don't complain about it when something goes wrong. You know the sentimental stuff won't be replaced because it can't be, it shouldn't have ever been in that store in the first place. The moral of the story is to keep the things you cherish close to you and don't trust strangers with them.

Posted by: Hard up Location: Killeen on Aug 28, 2008 at 08:51 AM
So Trevor, what should I stop foolishly spending my money on, house payment, water, electric, phone, car payment, gas for car,Insurance for the car, insurance for the family, medications, food for the family. I know toilet paper as I can use your comment instead. As far as pawning sentimental items, you do what you have to do to keep your family safe, which includes shelter and food. WE ARE LIVING WITHIN OUR MEANS, but in todays world it is getting hard just to try to do that.

Posted by: hb Location: killeen on Aug 28, 2008 at 08:33 AM
For all of those who are talking mess about the unfortunate people who lost items in the fire well, I hope that hard times never come your way & your comments don't come back & kick you. As for the insurance fraud comments, you obviously don't know the family that owns the business. They have poured heart & soul into their businesses & have earned everything that they have. Everyone needs to stop with their negativity & just keep all involved in their prayers.

Posted by: Sharon Location: Killeen on Aug 28, 2008 at 08:20 AM
To: Sorry on August 27, I meet the owner in January. He was very rude, so it must be a normal for him. I said that I would never give him my business because of his nasty attitude. Even his employees think that he is rude and prejudice. God doesn't like ugly. Hopefully he reads this forum and cleans up his act and when the store re-opens he will be a better business owner. God bless the employees, I know a young mother who worked there, trying to make ends meet. To those bashing people who pawn their items, unless you have been in that predictment you wouldn't understand. Given plasma or blood for money is worse then pawing an item to me....that $100 doesn't go to far with gas prices and other things on the rise...

Posted by: michelle Location: killeen on Aug 28, 2008 at 06:22 AM
Re: Vinnie, LOL, very funny, if it was an insurance scam, sounds like the owner did not know how to budget his money like the 'idiots' that pawn their stuff their. Nice. Condemning people because of their financial situation is a low place to go, but that is the way of this pathetic world we live in, kick them while their down, stomp on them and keep on going! It is nice to know their are people out there that have no money problems and like to criticize those that do not have extra cash to through around!

maybe people should quit spending their money like idiots and they wouldnt need a pawn shop

Posted by: donna Location: harker heights on Aug 27, 2008 at 10:57 PM
Yeah its a shame that the fire had to happen, especially right before the Labor Day weekend. But hopefully things will be right after all is said and done. I agree with the other posts,if you have sentimental items, dont pawn them. There were alot of nice items in the store.Sure am glad I didnt put one of those saddles on layaway,as I would have lost it too. God will take care of the ones who lost things in the fire, and if it was arson, all I can say is God will take care of you too. It was a great loss for Killeen, but I am sure Action Pawn will be a great store to shop in again in the future.Dont blame the store owner, its not his fault that the fire started, but then again who knows, only the investigators will find that one out. Good Luck to Action Pawn Shop. I for one liked to shop in that store. Sorry to hear about the fire. As for the ammo, I agree that should have been put somewhere else, not left in the store.

Posted by: My two cents Location: Killeen, Tx on Aug 27, 2008 at 08:52 PM
Wow. Some people are infuriating. How many people who are truly hard up do you know with SO MANY frivolous belongings that they can be picky about what they pawn? Don't judge people and tell them their items obviously aren't sentimental to them. You don't know their circumstances.

Posted by: vinnie on Aug 27, 2008 at 05:58 PM
bunch of cry babies..who cares, it was an insurance scam anyway, if you are so worried about your crap, you should have kept it and learned how to budget your money instead of spending it every payday on a bunch of b.s.

Posted by: cell_g Location: killeen on Aug 27, 2008 at 05:12 PM
so you have medical problems and can't donate plasma...mmmmm! Then I think that is a price that you pay!

Posted by: stepbo Location: killeen on Aug 27, 2008 at 04:44 PM
you know broke, some people have health issues where they cannot donate blood or plasma such as diabetes or anemia or they might be nursing a child, etc.

Posted by: jeff Location: bell on Aug 27, 2008 at 03:47 PM
that piece of junk that you had no use for anymore just turned sentimental. No way. No one buys that.

Posted by: KDM Location: Texas on Aug 27, 2008 at 02:35 PM
I pawned a bunch of records...they are priceless. Where else can I get copies of a Flock of Seagulls, the Village People, Starland Vocal Band, etc????

Posted by: gary Location: central tx. on Aug 27, 2008 at 02:33 PM
not poking fun, but i've never heard of a sentimental weedeater before now...lol...

I'd be worried about insurance fraud.... sounds fishy to me.

Re Chuck Neck, lol, my sentiments exactly! Our lawn equipment holds ALOT of memories, and pawning them was like ripping out my heart, but, now, to hear that its toooo short of a life in ended in a senseless fire! Gosh, I learned my lesson, dont pawn my stuff! Now, seriously, this is a sad situation, How come those guns were not put away in some type of safe at night? Isn't that like, a HUGE liability risk to leave those guns out like that? Curious. As for those who lost stuff, it is really heartbreaking, I did lose stuff in the tragic pawn shop fire a couple of years ago on Rancier, I did not lose much, especially considering the circumstances, but what was destroyed, was replaced with a similiar property. It does just take a few days to get things in order, and please pay heed to Wow in Killeen, have your pawn ticket, make an extra copy for your records to keep at home also.

Posted by: Hmmm.. on Aug 27, 2008 at 01:33 PM
Broken Location- would you mind watching my 7 kids while I drive to Temple in my SUV? Kind of defeats the purpose of that $100 you get for donating plasma. Smart Guy- If I had an Atari, I wouldn't pawn it because they are worth a lot of money, they are collector's items. Pawning your atari is not a smart idea.

Posted by: CS on Aug 27, 2008 at 12:22 PM
Wanted to let everyone involved and effected know that we are praying for them. We know that there are hard times and there are those that may have pawned things very dear to them to make it though and planned and getting those things back. To the owners...may you all have peace through this all. To the employees...remember God will provide. You should not bash, belittle, or judge those who made the decision to pawn things. Unless you were in their personal shoes at that moment you cannot understand. May God give those of you the heart of understanding to those who lost items.

Posted by: This is sad Location: Killeen on Aug 27, 2008 at 12:12 PM
Now a tragendy happend and all what you people can do is act like a pack of hyeana's. Yes, no one told them to pawn sentimental items, but does anyone know the real reason why they did it; No. So please act civilized and emphatize with the people. How would one feel, if it was their own property at stake right there.

Posted by: Sorry Location: killeen on Aug 27, 2008 at 11:50 AM
This is a terrible thing to happen. I feel so bad for everyone who lost things, I know some were very sentimental and could never be replaced. Also, to the employees who have lost their jobs...It's hard to find a good job these days. I'm even sorry for the owner...No one should have to go through something like this and I could only imagine how stressful the situation is and will continue to be. Although...I was in the store around Christmas last year, and I have to say, the owner was a total ass to me. I guess some people would say it's Karma...Maybe he was just having a bad day. Hopefully, he's not like that all of the time. I decided right then and there, though, to never go back in that store again. I didn't want to find out if he was like that on a daily basis...so rude and condecending. oh well...I wish him luck anyway and hope that everything works out for him. No sense in holding grudges, that just turns you into a very unhappy person.

Posted by: OMG Location: Killeen on Aug 27, 2008 at 11:24 AM
"How can they replace sentimental property?" DON'T PAWN IT!! If you are in need of extra $$ there are other ways to get it, there are so many loan companys out there, try them!!

Posted by: Wow Location: Killeen on Aug 27, 2008 at 10:52 AM
I asked the same question today, and I spoke to Mike. I DO NOT have property in the store, but I asked, and he said to give them a couple of days because they have to assess the damages themselves, and you will HAVE TO PRESENT YOUR PAWN TICKET (no ifs, ands or buts aobut it) and they will either give you the VALUE OF THE PROPERTY OR Give you property that is identical to what you had. If it was JEWELRY they will give you the APPRAISED value for it. JUST BE SURE TO HAVE YOUR PAWN TICKETS, BECAUSE THEY DO STILL HAVE RECORDS OF EVERYONES STUFF THAT WAS IN THERE. DO NOT TRY TO RIP THEM OFF.

Posted by: Broke Location: Waco on Aug 27, 2008 at 10:22 AM
You know, if you are that hard up for money you could donate plasma instead of parting with sentimental items. You can get $100 a week.

Posted by: stepbo Location: killeen on Aug 27, 2008 at 10:06 AM
for those that have sentimental items in there, what do we do. we pawn them because we have children to feed or bills to pay when we cannot make enough money or have no one else to turn to for help

Posted by: Lisa Location: Temple on Aug 27, 2008 at 09:35 AM
Why are you going pawn something sentimental???

Posted by: jessica on Aug 27, 2008 at 09:34 AM
You are going to have to wait till they determine the cause of fire before they do anything with people who had stuff there. No offense but i am sure that that is the last thing on there mind.

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 27, 2008 at 08:55 AM
thats a chance you take when you pawn your sentimental property.

Posted by: Concern Customer Location: Killeen on Aug 27, 2008 at 08:50 AM
What is the protocol in this situation? What happens to the personal property you have in the store that you have lost? What happens to the loan you have out on your property that you wanted to get back out? How is the item replaced? Just a few questions that many will ask if no already.

Posted by: Larson King Location: Killeen on Aug 27, 2008 at 08:45 AM
My watch was in there. I only got 10.00 for it, but it was my fathers.

Posted by: james Location: killeen on Aug 27, 2008 at 08:44 AM
what if you have items in that store? how do you find out if/when those items were damaged?

Posted by: Anon Location: Waco on Aug 27, 2008 at 08:17 AM
I agree, what happens to everything that was lost? During these low economic times, people have resorted to using pawn shops just to get by. If someone actually deliberately did this, they probably new that. What a sad story.

I have a sentimental Weedeater there. There's a lot of memories with that machine.

to broken hearted: and i know everyone else is thinking this also , who pawn sentimental property , I know times get tough but u should have pawned a dvd or an atari. There is no excuse for parting ways with sentimental property is some pawn shop that you probably got 15.00 bucks for the valuables , hey that was NOT a smart choice

Posted by: Madmax Location: Killeen on Aug 27, 2008 at 06:56 AM
There obviously was no sentimental value to your property if you pawned it..

Posted by: T Location: Troy on Aug 27, 2008 at 06:28 AM
That is the risk YOU take when you trade your items for a small amount of cash. Business deals have no sentimental value. My advice is to not part with anything that means so much to you.

Posted by: broken hearted Location: Copperas Cove on Aug 27, 2008 at 12:44 AM
For those of us who have personal property in the store..what do we do? Is there insurance to atleast cover the cost of replacement? How can they replace sentimental property?
