(August 28, 2008)—Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, says she hasn't been asked to become Republican John McCain's running mate, despite some speculation that the Texas congresswoman is in the running.
Hutchison told a gathering of the Texas Association of Counties on Thursday that she doesn't have plans to be in Ohio, where McCain is expected to announce his vice presidential pick Friday.
Hutchison later confirmed to reporters that she has not been asked, and said she understands that McCain has made his decision.
In speaking to the counties group, Hutchison sounded much more like a potential candidate for Texas governor in 2010 but wouldn't yet confirm she's entering that race.
A week ago, similar speculation surfaced about Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco, who turned out to be a dark horse finalist for the No. 2 spot on the Democratic presidential ticket.
He later said Barack Obama’s campaign had contacted him several weeks before U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi first advanced him as a good candidate for the vice presidency.
Obama, however, chose Delaware Senator Joe Biden, who was nominated by acclamation Wednesday night at the Democratic National Convention in Denver.
