(August 31, 2008)--President Bush is skipping the Republican National Convention in Minnesota and will travel instead to Texas to meet with emergency workers and evacuees as Hurricane Gustav bears down on the Gulf Coast.
Officials at the Federal Emergency Management Agency briefed the president on Sunday, and afterward Mr. Bush urged residents to heed local officials' order to evacuate.
"Know that the American people stand with you. We'll face this emergency together,” Mr. Bush said.
The White House said the president spoke by phone with New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin.
A spokeswoman says Nagin told Mr. Bush the forecast did not look good, but that he was pleased so far with the coordination with the federal government.
The White House announced earlier that Bush and Vice President Cheney would skip the convention's opening day.
