(September 1, 2008)—Hurricane Gustav was whipping up the surf Monday along the Alabama Gulf Coast.

Huge waves lapped the beach in Gulf Shores this morning.

Flooding has forced road closings in several low-lying areas of coastal Alabama, but it appeared that many resorts and ports have avoided serious damage from the storm.

President Bush has approved a request from Alabama's governor for disaster assistance, which allows the state and individuals to apply for federal aid.

Residents of coastal areas were ordered over the weekend to evacate.
