(September 4, 2008)--The 18-year-old daughter of Georgetown Police Chief David Morgan ihas pleaded guilty to a cocaine possession charge.

Samantha Ann Morgan was originally charged with assault on a public servant, evading arrest, possession of a controlled substance and delivery of marijuana, which could have added up to more than 30 years in prison if convicted on all counts.

Williamson County District Attorney John Bradley told the Austin American-Statesman the evidence didn't support those charges and a plea deal offered to her was standard.

The plea deal calls for five years probation, 30 days of jail time and a $2,500 fine.

Had she been convicted of the original charges, she would have faced a possible sentence of more than 20 years in prison.

Morgan was riding with three males in a sport-utility vehicle that was stopped June 15 for a broken headlight, officials said.

After officer Shanna Shelly got permission to search the vehicle, she found a purse that contained a bag of marijuana and $1,247 in cash.

When the officer attempted to arrest Morgan, she ran about 200 yards then dropped to the ground.

As the officer attempted to put her in the police car, Morgan kicked the officer in the thigh, officials said.

Morgan was strip-searched in the Williamson County Jail, and officers found 2.7 grams of crack cocaine.

She was charged with assault on a public servant, evading arrest and delivery of marijuana.

District Judge Ken Anderson set sentencing for Oct. 17, when he will either accept the plea deal, or set the case for jury

Instead of judging, we should be talking about why our young people are into drugs period. A police chief's daughter, the preacher's daughter, etc. has not one thing to do with what is going on. Why are our young people ruining their lives and destroying themselves? When that is solved, maybe we can all get back to living again. It is sad. All trucks maybe should be checked for drugs as bet there are many carrying drugs into Texas and getting away with it. With what mercy you show is the mercy you will get.

I was talking to my co-worker whos son was caught with 3 grams of cocaine. As soon as he plead guilty, he got probation as well. Its called a plea bargain. It frees up the jails and courts for worse offenders and is common place for first offenders, even those who kick. I dont have a problem with that as long as there is room for pedophiles, wife abusers, rapists and murderers.
