(September 4, 2008)—Sony announced a recall Thursday of about 73,000 of its VAIO TZ-series Notebook Computers because of a problem that could cause overheating and put users at risk of burns.
Sony has received 15 reports of overheating and one of a user who suffered a minor burn as the result of overheating caused by irregularly positioned wires near the computers hinge and/or a dislodged screw inside the hinge, which can cause short circuits, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Thursday.
The recalled notebook computer models are the VAIO VGN-TZ100 series, VGN-TZ200 series, VGN-TZ300 series and VGN-TZ2000 series, the CPSC said.
The computers' screen size is about 11.1" measured diagonally.
Not all units are affected and owners are advised to contact Sony to determine if their unit is included in the recall.
The computers were sold in stores and online nationwide from July 2007 through August 2008.
