(May 14, 2006)--The National Guard is being called out to help deal with torrential rain and flooding in New England.
In New Hampshire, water is washing out roads, flowing over dams and forcing people from their homes.
Gov. John Lynch activated the National Guard in response, calling it ``a very serious situation.''
Some areas have seen seven inches of rain, and forecasters say up to five more inches could be on the way.
About 100 people were evacuated from their homes in Wakefield because of concerns about two dams.
Officials also reported a railroad culvert and embankment washed out in Milton.
And officials say the town of Hooksett is essentially closed because so many roads are flooded.
The National Guard has also been activated in Massachusetts, where Gov. Mitt Romney has declared a state of emergency.
In Maine, dozens of roadways were flooded in southern part of the state and shelters were set up.
